Another tour question/Repeating lyrics/Bikesongs/+

Week 820 of our Stones poll is here and once again we will answer to another tour related question, which is: Should the Stones use an opening act on the new US tour? We asked this same question back in ’05, and many fans back then felt that the Stones didn’t need an opening act. So how about today, would you rather have the Stones take the stage and perhaps play 2 sets, instead of having a special guest play first for them? What do you prefer? To vote and let us know, click on: Stones Weekly Poll

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: Of the warhorses, which one song would you like to hear the Stones play again on the new US tour? By the thinnest of margins, “Jumping Jack Flash” with 16.5% beat out “Midnight Rambler” at 16.3%. The 2 songs to get the least amount of votes were IORR, with no votes, and "Brown Sugar", with only one lone vote. Seems with Bobby gone now, perhaps the song should be given a rest?

Lets now move on over to the Classic Rock Poll, where it’s week 462, and as usual, we will vote in 2 different polls for the week. In the first poll we ask: Of the songs that repeat the same lyrics over and over again, which one is best? (Part 2 of 5) Week 2 of our poll on word repetition in songs. What we covered in last week’s poll post still applies this week, and again, a word or lyric has to be repeated more than 15 times in a song to make the list. Plus it has to be a real word to be listed, with one exception this week, which I’ll get to after this…. There are 2 words listed this week that some might not think are real words, but both are. One listed is heard in the Stephen Stills’ song, the word being “dit”, which is a real word, look it up if you like. The second is repeated in the song ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight” , “'Wimoweh’, and many think this one is a made-up too, but it isn’t, it just isn’t an English word (so you may not find it if you look it up). But it’s taken from one of the many different African languages (I can’t recall now which one) and it means “he is a lion”. Yes, non-English words count too in this poll!... Now, the one exception to using something that isn’t a real word, is found this week in the Rush song “YYZ”, which is an instrumental and has no words to it. But while putting this poll together, I learned that the title is repeated over and over again in Morse code by how the music is played, and that was not only cool to learn, but IMO, too cool not to list!

So it’s time to vote in Part 2 of this question, with 35 new songs to choose from. To make your pick and vote, click here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

In this week’s VS poll, we return to placing songs up against each other after a few weeks of doing so with albums. The new question is: 'The Motorcycle Song' (by Arlo Guthrie) vs 'Bad Motor Scooter' (by Montrose/Sammy Hagar), which song is better? I was thinking, with warmer weather here (okay, it’s snowing tonight at my house as I type this out, but anyway…) it is the time to break out your motorcycle and go for a ride on your bike (if you got one), so why don’t we take 2 of the songs that did very well in the voting when we asked for everybody’s favorite motorcycle songs in the Rock poll a few years back and put them up against each other?

“The Motorcycle Song” was written and recorded by Arlo Guthrie and showed up on his debut album Alice's Restaurant in 1967. Like the album's title track, this song has a bit more storytelling to it and less singing. But not by any means a rap, just a wonderful story as only Arlo could tell it. It’s about driving his motorcycle off a mountain side and falling/landing on top of a police car and then what happens after all of that. Unlike the other great story on this album that the LP is named after, this one isn’t real.

'Bad Motor Scooter' was written by Sammy Hagar and recorded back in 1973 when he was the lead vocalist for the band Montrose, and released as a single on their debut album Montrose. Although Sammy was credited as the sole writer of the song, it was the band's lead guitarist, Ronnie Montrose, who came up with the far out, cool opening to the song that sounded like a motorcycle, but it was actually Ronnie playing a distorted electric fuzz slide guitar. Although the band would have 2 or 3 hit songs, this one is what most remember them for. Ronnie continued to play the song live up until his death a few years back, and Sammy still plays it live today too, and has included it on at least one of his solo albums.

So which song out of the 2 do you dig more? To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: Of the songs that repeat the same lyrics over and over again, which one is best? (Part 1 of 5) 2 songs alone gathered up 53% of all the votes in this one, those 2 songs, which both have similar repeating backing vocals which helped to make them both stand out, were “Hey Jude”, by The Beatles (26.7%) and “Sympathy For The Devil” by The Stones (26.3%). Only 3 other songs saw enough votes to live on to Part 5, the third pick surprised me some, it was “Band on the Run” by Paul McCartney/Wings, with 6.1% of the vote, and then the next two songs tied with 5.7% of the votes each, are: “I Need To Know”, by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and “Jailhouse Rock” by Elvis Presley.

To see the full results from this poll and the many songs that didn’t make it to the final round, click on: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 461.

In last week’s VS poll, we asked: Abbey Road by The Beatles vs Exile On Main Street by The Rolling Stones, which album is better? Well well well, although the VS polls are fun and popular, they are still usually the least voted on each week, and up to last week, they were the only poll out of the 4 weekly ones that we run, that had never reached and surpassed the 600 mark. That changed last week as this question was well liked. This poll always does very well in the vote count whenever either the Stones or Beatles are a part of the question, and when we put both of them together in the same poll like I did last week, well we set a record, as the old record that we just broke, was also set in a Fabs/Stones matchup. So it’s nice to know that, but more important, which album won?

To see which LP, in a very close vote, came out on top, just go here: Classic Rock VS Poll, week 461. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

Now it’s time to check out our Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 215 and we will ask this: John Lennon vs Paul McCartney, who was the better musician in the Beatles? Unofficially this is part 3 of the John VS Paul questions, and perhaps the last week of matching the 2 up against each other in this matter. Both John and Paul were/are excellent musicians besides being great singers and songwriters, and both can/could play several different instruments. Of course their main instruments in the Beatles were guitar for John and bass for Paul, with both of them on a few songs switching their instruments around with each other, and we also saw both of them playing a bunch of keyboards on different songs, and both played the drums more than once when Ringo wasn’t around, too, and both of them also played on other instruments while in the band, too.

But, which of the 2 Beatles do you think is the better musician? To vote this week’s Beatles poll, just use this link: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Beatle poll we asked: John Lennon vs Paul McCartney, who was the better singer in the Beatles? The pick for this one, unlike the question we asked 2 weeks ago, was much closer. But who came out on top? To find out, go here: Beatle’s Weekly Poll – week 214.

Well as I half noted above, you won’t want to be out riding on a bike tonight where I live, it’s a cold and snowy spring nite here indeed, how’s it at your place?

I thank all of you who voted in all of this week's, and last week’s polls!
