... We lost the founder of the Rolling Stones, Brian Jones. OK, officially it happened on July 3 but the exact time of death was never really determined. In all likelihood, whatever happened to Brian happened shortly after midnight. One thing's for sure: here in North America, it was still July 2.
At the time of his death, I knew nothing about Brian Jones and wouldn't for a few more years. In the summer of 1969, I was a kid and my entire focus that summer was the Appollo 11 mission. I dreamed of maybe one day following in Neil Armstrong's illustrious footsteps. So much for childhood fantasies.
In time, I discovered the music of the Rolling Stones, which has enriched my life in more ways than I can count and continues to do so every day. Thank you for the Rolling Stones, Brian. As Jim Morrison (whose passing is also remembered tomorrow) once sang, "there will never be another one like you". Time to go and listen to "Ruby Tuesday" now.
