Here was the one problem with the Stones that night.... They all been up for two straight days working on this show.... They took the stage in the second day of the Circus, after 2AM, and finished playing around 5AM. More than half of the fans in the stands had already left by then because of how long the show went on for. The only other time I recall this happened to a rock band was the following year at Woodstock, when the Jefferson Airplane stayed up all night waiting to take the stage because of delays of other bands before them. They finally went on after 8am and played what many called their worst live show ever. From what I saw in the movie's editors cut of Woodstock, I agree, they were terrible. It's also true that Jimi Hendrix had the same problem when he closed Woodstock, instead of playing Sunday night, he played Monday morning - but he knew beforehand it was gonna be that way and he slept a few hours before he went on, which made all the difference in his performance.
So getting back to the Circus, the Stones were all dead on their feet when they played that night... I don't care if they were all night owls, go two days working and by the end of your shift you will be dead tired no matter how use you are to staying up all night long. That was why they might not had played as great as expected - but in my eyes, they still played good enough to me.
