No one got me the book for xmas or bday until last year because everyone assumed someone else had already gotten it for me. I held off on reading it cause I was already in the middle of a 3 other books and I wasn't getting much chance to read anyways.
Then, a week before my last bday my gma died and I had to go back home for the funeral. A last minute packing decision has me shoving it in my carry-on, thinking it would cheer me up, but instead I cried the whole way to Chicago. It's the rhythm of the storytelling and my gma was another great drunken storyteller, so it was kind of a cathartic match. I also think it helped me to write her eulogy, on a subconscious level.
But like, this totally made me cry, not because of the subject matter, a little bit because of the Bessie quote (and the realization that a buncha people reading the book would think he'd derailed), but cause of the rhythm...which is why he ended with the quote:
"You could get hold of speed at any truck stop; truck drivers replied upon it. Stop over here, pull over to some struck stop and ask for Dave. Give me a Jack Daniel's on the rocks and a bag. Gimme a pigfoot and a bottle of beer."
Anyways. I guess for people who labor under the delusion that autobiographies are somehow supposed to be factual or that stories shouldn't be bent in favor of the telling, it might be annoying.
I'm gonna say, I laugh out loud alot. I got from Nellcote to Steel Wheels in one sitting. But I've slowed down now that Bill is leaving and the Chucks and the Daryls are coming in. Doesn't seem as interesting anymore...
