RE: RE: RE: RE: The Three?

Well I guess I would have to half agree your baseball analogy as well. You want to get the best players out on the field in order to keep the fans enaged, and music is similar in a lot of respects. Regardless of who's still in the band or not, it doesn't take anything away from the ones that remain -- Mick, Keith, or (especially) Charlie, and Ronnie certainly carries his weight as well. But some bands and performers are true legends, to the extent that the initial image you have of them cannot be shaken. I grew up with the Beatles and early Stones, and the original 4 and 5 members of those two respective bands and what they each contributed to make their group as great as they were, that cannot be replaced, not for me anyway. The Rolling Stones are still the Rolling Stones, but it's not quite the same when the onstage head count of non-original musicians and vocalists outstrips the number of original members present. Still, the fact that they are still out there after 45+ years is nothing short of extraordinary.

The Who is a bit different, and the fact that the two ex-members died suddenly with their boots on gives them a certain amount of cred, but not quite enough at this point. I won't be running out to see them. Townshend is their leader, creative force, and his playing just keeps getting better with time, but the absence of Moon and Entwistle (yes, he ranks as one of the all-time best, if not THE best bass player) are huge gaps that cannot be offset by Pete, Zak, or anyone else. And sadly Roger's vocal chords betrayed him years ago -- he goes through the motions and that's about it.

I wish I was a "loyal" enough fan to say that attrition over time has made no difference in my current perception of these bands, or whether I'd still pay to see them perform, but it's not the case.
