RE: RE: RE: The Three?

I'm going to play devil's advocate here (even if I half agree with you):

Going by this, when sport fans go to see - say the NY Yankees, they are not seeing the NY Yankees anymore since they haven't had the original players for over 100 years! This would apply to all sport teams of course. So where do you draw the line?

Now when it comes to music, yes, things are different. In sports, if you want to see a professional sport team play, like the Yankees, to maintain that pro level, they need young players to do it, and of course they are still the Yankees - with just new, younger players. But with music (rock) groups it is different. If you hear a song put out by the Stones from 1965 that you love, and you pay to see them play that song live, you want the people who originally made that music. But they don't have to be 22 years old any longer to still produce that same sound, right? Well maybe. Since only 3 of those guys from '65 are still in the band, what does this mean? Depends on the song. If this song you want to hear is "Paint It Black", the most important player on that song is long gone and not there anymore. But if it was a song like "As Tears Go By", then the key players are there. But then take songs made by the Stones in the mid '70s and '80s and play them live and only the original bassist is missing. Big difference! Ron Wood has been a Stone for longer than 30 years, and he played better than Keith did on the last tour. So how can you say he isn't a Stone? He is a Stone, just like Derek Jeter is a Yankee.

But again, unlike sports, with some forms of music - like Rock music, you got to draw a line in the sand somewhere. With Classical music you don't have to. The NY Philharmonic might not have the same players they had 25 years ago, but they are still the NY Philharmonic. Same with the Boston Symphony. But what about the Stones? Or The Who? For almost 20 years now it has been the Glimmers with Charlie boy and Ronnie. That is who I think of when I think of the band today - and they still sound like the Stones to me, and more than half of the original players are still there. But with the Who, that isn't the case. They lost one of rock's best ever drummers and lost the very best bassist ever to play in a rock band. Yes they might still have the lead singer, but as far as the band goes only one person is left playing. That isn't the Who anymore!

Okay, I'm done for tonight. I got a meteor shower to go watch right now (The Leonids), the peak is suppose to be happening in the next hour. So up to my tower I go and on out to the roof to have a long, good look. It's only 12°F outside right now, so I better dress warm, Ronnie!
