- Crestone Weather Notes For 2026 -

On January 4, we saw a record high temperature tied when the thermometer rose up past 50 degrees and settled at 51 degrees at 144 pm. This record was first reached in 2001.

2026's first measurable rain comes the earliest ever seen in any year before in the Crestone-Baca, happening this year on February 13. This was only the third time rain has ever been seen in February and only the second time that measurable rain has fallen in the month. Before 2004, it had never, ever rained in the months of December, January and February, but thanks to climate change, it has now rained 6 times in those 3 months, including 4 times with measurable rainfall.

A record high temperature was reached on February 24 when our thermometer surpassed the old record for the date of 59 degrees - which was only set the year before in 2025, as our area saw a high of 60 degrees.

March of 2026 turned out to be the warmest March ever seen in our little town (more on that below). There were so many record highs broken, I'm gonna just list them in as simple of a way that I can, so here I go: March 1 high was 61 degrees; old record for the date was 59 degrees, set in 2025; March 2 high was 61 degrees; old record 60 in 2022; March 5  tied the record high at 59 degrees, first reached in 2006.

Now, the earliest ever seen 70 degree day in the Crestone-Baca took place on March 18, when the thermometer rose all the way up to 71 degrees. This not only broke the record high for the day, which was 68 degrees, set in 2017, but it was the earliest our area ever saw a temperature reading in the 70s. The earliest record that was broken, was set in 2012 on March 21, when the high that day was 70 degrees. That means that this reading was also the warmest reading ever seen in this area in March. But, that record would be broken on the next several days to come....

On  March 19, the insane warm weather continued when the high temperature reached up to 76 degrees, breaking the old record for the date of 69 degrees, set in 2017. This was also the warmest temperature reading ever seen in March (or for that matter, in the wintertime), and the record broken was only just set the day before!

Now back to just listing the record highs, with more all time highs in March included: March 20, high was 77 degrees; old record for the date of 69 degrees, set in1997.... March 21 high was 78, old record was 70 in 2004;... March 22 high was 72, old mark was 68, set in 2012; March 23, high was 70, old record was 68 degrees, in 2012. March 24, record high was 78, old was 69, in 2012. March 25, record high was 79 degrees, this was the warmest day yet and now holds the record for the warmest temp ever seen in March.

On March 26, record high for the date broken at 77 degrees, old record was 68°, which was only set on this date last year in '25. We then went 2 days in a row with still warm temps but no records, then on March 29, the high was 70 degrees, breaking the old record of 68 in 2012.

For a rap up on these noted March records, we saw a total of 12 record highs! But what I didn't include, were a few more record high lows - that took place overnight that were also broken on 3 or 4 of these dates listed. Sorry, I did record them and sent them out to the NWS, but I've typed enough for today, as my arthritic fingers are hurting bad, so I didn't list them here. But the records I didn't note are online at the NWS site if you want to spend some time there checking them all out... But one last note, March of '26 was officially the warmest March ever seen in our area, and that was true for most spots in Colorado. For the Crestone-Baca, the new all time warmest March average temp set this year is now 46.5 degrees. The old record was 41.9 degrees, set in 1989, and this marked only the 4th time our average March temperature was above 40 degrees.
