Welcome to this week’s Poll Post! For our weekly polls happening this week, we'll once again vote in 3 polls instead of 2, since at the Stones poll we will have an extra poll looking at another brand-new song. This poll, which enters week 1,260 of overall voting and week 151 of rating their songs, will look at the Stones second new single. So this first poll question askes this:Rate the Stones new song “Sweet Sounds Of Heaven”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).
“Sweet Sounds Of Heaven” from Official Video.
Released on September 28, 2023 as a single to the soon to be released new LP Hackney Diamonds. In this soul and gospel song, the three remaining Stones, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ronnie Wood, are joined by Stevie Wonder on Piano, Steve Jordan on the Drums and Lady Gaga, who’s powerful vocals show up starting in the second verse.
The song opens up with some wonderful piano playing by Mr. Wonder, and with that, the entire song takes off from there. When I first heard this one, I really didn’t care for it at all - and almost didn’t get to the end of the full 7 minutes of the song. But I got in an email from former Gasser Jimmy Joe who I still speak to from time to time and he asked me what my feelings were on this new one. I hadn’t listened to the tune a second time yet, and because of his emails, I then played it a few times in a row. As I played it the second time it instantly didn’t sound as bad as the first time and by the third playing, I liked it. I went from feeling it was a 1 or a 2 the first time I heard it to a 5 or 6, and now, after hearing it many more times, well, let’s just says I now dig it a lot! No question, you got to hear this one several times to appreciate it. Well, at least I had too! My guess is that this tune will for sure be a number that grows on people as time goes by, and just like last week when we rated the other new song, “Angry”, this week's rating we give it will be a temporary rating, until we rate it a second time in about a year, after it’s no longer brand-new.
The interesting thing is there is 2 versions to it, one around 5 minutes long and the other one - with it’s false ending - going for over 7 minutes, with the official lyrics video, not covering that extra part at all! Why not, it’s flat out great and cool, and if I’m recalling correctly, its only the third time in 61 plus years that the Stones has included a false ending in one of their many songs! My guess from what I’m hearing, is that Lady Gaga is why the false ending happened and it wasn’t planned, and perhaps when the lyrics video was being made (which is overwise cool enough), it wasn’t included, and MJ realized too late for the lyrics video that it needed to be in the song. So the vid we link to at the voting page isn’t the lyrics one, but the other one they released, which really shows nothing - but is the almost 8 minutes long release. So yes, that’s the version of the song that we are rating and not the 5 minute take. BTW, the lyrics to this one are up on the site's Lyrics page if you want to see the lyrics while you listen to the song.
Here's the studio lineup for this new song: Lead Vocal: Mick Jagger; Harmony Vocal: Lady Gaga; Guitars: Keith Richards & Ronnie Wood; Piano: Stevie Wonder; Drums: Steve Jordan.

Now for Poll 2, and our regular rating poll for the week, is this: Rate the Stones song “Backstreet Girl”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).
“Backstreet Girl” Sheet music for the tune.
Recorded between August and November of 1966, it was first released in the UK on Between the Buttons in January of 1967. Then in the U.S., it came out a few months later, appearing on their Flowers LP, that June,
"Back Street Girl", is a Baroque Pop and Folk song, and had it's lyrics written by Mick Jagger, with the rest of the music coming from the band in the studio. Always wrong when it comes to the Stones Wiki, claims that Brian Jones plays the Harpsichord on this one, but that's not true, as Jack Nitzsche did. Back in the day when this came out, it was talked about that Brian played both the Accordion and Organ on this one, making a big deal out of the fact that Brian, a rocker, was once again playing a non-rock instrument on a rock song (but no, this wasn't a Rock song!) and yet made it work. But yes, the studio logs confirmed that it was BJ playing the accordion, and not some session musician, as back in the '60s, the Stones didn't use such musicians (other than Nicky Hopkins, starting around '68), since Brian took care of such work, and Jack (and or former original Stone, Stu Stewart) were also around most of the time to lend the band a hand when an extra player was needed. So here is the correct studio lineup according to the studio logs: Vocal: Mick Jagger; Accordion and Organ: Brian Jones; Acoustic Guitar: Keith Richards; Bass Guitar: Bill Wyman; Bells, Castanets: Charlie Watts; Harpsichord: Jack Nitzsche.

Last week at the Stones Poll we answered 2 questions, this was the first one we voted on: Rate the Stones new song “Angry”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).
“Angry” from Angry’s Official Video.
So, for Poll 1 and the Stones new song “Angry”, well I guess I dig this new song more so than the rest of my fellow Stones fans (which since the 1990s, still seems to be happening). Anyway, the top rating for this one was an 8, taking in 51.2%. Now, since I got in more than one emails last week when I noted here that I wasn’t gonna list the song in the Stones official standings since it was a temporary poll until the song is out for a full year and then we will rate it again. Well, at least some of you disagree with this line of thinking and feel I should temporarily list it, and in a year’s time when the official poll is held, remove that result and place the new result in the standings. So I had several days to think this over, and decided, okay, I’ll do that (and I’ll also do it for this week new song we’re rating, too). So, to see where this song is in the standings (for now anyway), just click on here: Stones Song Ratings & Standings - List Page 5. Or, for the full, finial results from this poll, just click here: Stones Weekly Poll 1.
For the second Stones question last week, we asked/rated this: Rate the Stones song “Mona (I Need You Baby)”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).
“Mona (I Need You Baby)” Sheet music for the song.
“Mona (I Need You Baby)” saw a top rating of a 10 last week, taking in a strong 76.8% of the first-place votes. It seems that in most weeks when we vote, most Stones fans, while still loving the Stones to this very day, still love the oldest songs from the ‘60s and ‘70s the most, and no questions need to be asked on this. But after all of these weeks, I’ll still ask them anyway, since after 20 plus years of asking weekly questions, I really don’t have too many other ones left to ask! Now we’ll move on over to this week’s Beatles Poll – where the poll enters week 649 of voting and week 83 of rating the different Beatle songs, and for this week we’ll answer this: Rate the Beatles song, “All My Loving”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest) .
“All My Loving” Early Beatles ditty
"All My Loving" is from the Beatles second UK album With the Beatles, which was released in 1963, after they recorded the song on 30 July 1963 in eleven takes. It was one of the few early Fab songs written by Paul McCartney alone, as the majority of the Beatles early songs were written by John Lennon alone. Of course, like the Lennon written tunes, this one was credited to the Lennon–McCartney partnership. The tune wasn't officially released as a single in the UK or in the States, yet it received considerable radio airplay. It was released as a single in Canada and in several other major countries where it went to #1 on the charts in most of them. The Canadian single was imported into the U.S. in enough quantities to peak at number 45 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in April 1964. Macca noted this about the song: "It was the first song I'd ever written the words first for. I never wrote words first, it was always some kind of accompaniment. I've hardly ever done it since either." Lennon's strong rhythm guitar riff stands out in the song - even more so than George Harrison’s lead.
The lineup for this one was: Paul McCartney – Lead Vocals, Bass Guitar; John Lennon – Harmony Vocals and Rhythm Guitar; George Harrison – Backing and Harmony Vocals, Lead Guitar; Ringo Starr – Drums; with George Martin – Producer. Let’s now look over last week’s poll results, which asked: Rate the Beatles song “You've Got To Hide Your Love Away”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest) .
“You've Got To Hide Your Love Away” Beatles playing the ditty in Help!
Last week at the poll we saw – well you know what we saw, the very same rating that every Lennon/McCartney song has seen so far – a 10, this time taking 88.5% of the vote count. To see just how far up in the the rating and standings it landed, just click on here: The Beatles Song Ratings and Standings Page . So that does it for this week's Poll Post…. It’s just so sad to see that a brand-new religious war has broken out in the Middle East once again - but then again, it's really the same old religious war that has been going on for thousands of years over there. It’s like the people there all hate each other simply because they got different religions! I’m totally embarrassed that some of my blood (20%) comes directly from that area. But there isn’t anything I can do about it, either. I’m just glad I’m an Atheist!... Let's see, I really don't wish to close-out the Poll Post talking about that, as both war and religions both suck.... But not like there's been anything good happened around my domain of late.... We had a sick house here in the last week, with any illness something I'm supposed to avoid at all costs with my lung problems, and especially when it comes to colds, and that's what my grandson had; and just like when he had COVID (or when he would get sick as a boy), he gave his damn cold to me, so we were both sick all of last week, with my oxygen concentrator machine working overtime thanks to this. My grandson blamed his illness on his baby daughter, yet I didn't notice her being ill at all, she's been nothing but her happy self from what I could see! Anyway, as an old man with several different health issues, I just never feel okay anymore anyway, and my baby granddaughter is the only thing that puts a smile on my face these days. She's 2 years old today (Monday, she has the same birthday as my hero, John Lennon!), so “Happy Birthday Everly!”. But as most of you know, babies are real good at getting their parents and all other family members who they live with, sick. But still, I didn't notice anything wrong with her myself.
I do hope all of you have a great week ahead!
