Different things for different reasons. If it's a party and I'm a DJ, then I'm gonna play danceable stuff. If it's a show on the radio, it's gonna be different, and since I like what radio could be, I'll pick what I'd do for a show today. Tomorrow it would be different, but here's how I'd do it:
1 - The Rolling Stones - Rip This Joint. Every show should have a theme song, and this one explains my whole philosophy of rock n roll in two minutes.
2 - The Dexateens - Teenager. This ain't some old fart's show, it's mine. Teenager is all rock n roll muscle and noisy goodness.
3 - The Reigning Sound - Time Bomb High School. Still plenty of rock, but a little roll to ease into the next track.
4 - The Detroit Cobras - I'll Keep Holding On. A great song, and Rachel Nagy sings it wonderfully.
Then you get a minute to get a beer while I blab and play PSA's.
5 - Kings of Leon - Crawl. Their last album took some time to get to me, but even with the huge U2 influence, I just really like this song.
6 - Those Darlins - Wild One. Crazy girls from Murfreesboro just stating the facts about handling crazy.
7 - Drive By Truckers - Three Dimes Down. Keep things recent and a little more rock than country, but this set is pretty southern and is gonna stay that way.
8 - Lynyrd Skynyrd - I Ain't the One. Here's a band I've never liked much, but I've been listening to them a bit lately and trying to just listen. I've been enjoying them for the most part, and I'm glad I'm finding out what so many other people like about these guys. The new band is dead to me, though.
9 - The Nomads - Motorhead. You would think these guys would do a rough and tumble version of this Motorhead classic, but it's acoustic and twangy and I love it.
Then go get another beer cuz it's time for local news and PSA's.
10 - Roxy Music - Amazona. What a great song, with a really cool guitar from Phil Manzanera.
11 - Jimi Hendrix - Stone Free. I always thought this was one of Jimi's absolute best.
12 - Built to Spill - Goin' Against Your Mind. A nice long song where Doug Martsch just lets it rip on his guitar.
Get a beer! Time for local sports!
13 - The Mooney Suzuki - And Begin. Time to get reckless and loud again!
14 - The Mono Men - 54-40 or Fight. A killer track by a band that always delivers the goods.
15 - Coffinberry - Bombs and Palm Trees. Coffinberry is one of my favorite Cleveland bands. I haven't decided what song I'd play off the brand new album, but I'd play this one over and over and it would fit perfect in this set.
16 - Pretenders - Tattooed Love Boys. May as well go down I77 a little way and play one of Chrissie's best.
17 - Blacktop - Flagpole Hill. The Dirtbombs are my favorite Mick Collins project, but Blacktop was awesome, but drugs screwed it up. It's too bad, because there were real flashes of brilliance there.
Get a beer! Time for PSA's and DJ talk.
18 - David Bowie - The Width of a Circle (from Santa Monica 72). Mick Ronson had a lot of reasons to be considered a guitar hero, but this is all he needed for his calling card.
19 - Deadstring Brothers - Ain't No Hidin' Love. Pure Stonesy goodness via Detroit. It will be a nice lead in to the show closer.
20 - Two Cow Garage - No Shame. A nice way to close the show, and much in the sense of my favorite Bill Murray speech from Meatballs, this song says it's pretty okay to blow it and chuck it all and try something else.
My show would always be a mix of old and new stuff. My guess is I'm the only one that would think it was any good, too.
