Satanic Majesties was Decca's biggest seller ever when it came out. It was popular in 67, though since then it hasn't fared that well, and maybe it shouldn't. Sgt. Pepper probably influences more music, though today it would be indirectly more than obvious references.
But from a prior post - how can anyone in 1999 not look at anything from a 99 perspective? If something is truly great, it's just great, and it's great all the time. I don't need to play Exile on a turntable or an 8 track to be blown away by it, nor do I need to smoke nasty old Mexican pot by the bucketful to enjoy Beggar's Banquet.
