Jimmy - I just got to my friend's house in Brooklyn
after tonight's Tom Waits show at the Beacon -
I had been predicting that Keith would show up,
and he did (so did Elvis Costello & other celebs)
but not to play. Both Elvis & Keith got applause when they
sat down in the audience. Tom was TRANSCENDENT, words
can't describe it - but during "Picture in a Frame"
I thought "I should go to the bathroom. It's a long show.
Now this is out of character for me, but I got up
& went down to the restroom. As I was walking out I
ALMOST RAN INTO KEITH RICHARDS."Hey Man -- um -- how are you?"
I said. I shook his hand as he passed me. "Better now" he rasped,
laughing, as he relieved himself. A young handler watched
his back. I waited outside the bathroom and asked him to
autograph my Tom Waits ticket. He paused. "I've seen you ten
times in the last two years," I said. "Well. THAT's worth
an autograph," he said.
He looked, by the way, EXACTLY like Keith Richards.
All in black, skinny, angular, way too cool, grey.
Someone else approached. He handed my pen back.
"Thank you," I said and returned to my seat. I'd
been gone 5 minutes.
