Poll Post for the week starting Monday, April 22

After another busy week for me (thanks to a broken, main computer), I almost didn’t get to working on the 2 new weekly polls, because of computer issues (but I figured out how to work around it all), so after finally getting to the polls today and deciding what we would rate and then getting them published online, here’s this week’s Poll Post.

As I always do, I’ll write about the Stones poll first, where enter week 1,288 of this poll, and week 179 of rating the band’s songs. Here’s the song that we’re rating this week: Rate the Stones song “Doncha Bother Me”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).

“Doncha Bother Me” From Decca Hit Parade release

Recorded between March 3 and 8, 1966 and then released on the album Aftermath on 15 April 1966.

Had "Doncha Bother Me" been written just 2 or 3 years earlier, the song would have been credited to Nanker Pledge, the pseudonym that the Stones used when the entire band wrote music together. But their manager, Andrew Loog Oldham, by this time insisted that all the songs put together by the band, be only credited to "Jagger Richards", and too bad for the other members of the band who lost a ton of income thanks to this terrible, heartless manager they had. He was the true blame for the anger that was starting to grow within the band at this time, as Bill Wyman even noted this in one of his books (sorry, can't recall which one, and I read all of them). Bill's main instrument on this tune was the Piano, which sounds cool, yet you can barely hear it - on and off (listen for it), as the mixing engineer's work is also not too great here (since Bill's playing is turned down in the mix way too low). Charlie Watts starts off the song (and ends it) with his drums upfront, but it's Brian Jones who shines the most on this one, with his wonderful lead slide guitar playing, while Mick Jagger sounds like his usual self in singing the song. Plus, he also wrote the lyrics, which some might say is one of his earlier misogynistic songs (I wrote about that last week). Guess it could be looked at in that way, but it also could be looked at being about a guy who just doesn't want to be around an ex-girlfriend that won't leave him alone, too.

This was, as far as I can recall, the only Stones song where 2 different harmonica players are heard and appeared on the same track (Mick and Brian) - yet they are heard together playing for only a very brief duet. But hey, it works! Also, like Bill, but a lot worse, Keith Richards guitar is hardly heard at all in the mix on this one, can you even actually hear him?

The following is the studio lineup for this number: Mick Jagger: Lead Vocal, 2nd Harmonica heard; Brian Jones: Electric Bottleneck Slide Guitar, 1st Harmonica heard; Charlie Watts: Drums; Bill Wyman: Piano and Bass Guitar; Keith Richards: Acoustic Guitar; with Percussion by Jack Nitzsche.

Let’s now look at last week’s voting in the Stones Poll, as we answered this: Rate the Stones song “I Go Wild”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).

“I Go Wild” From Voodoo Lounge Uncut

I was half thinking that this one was gonna end up with a 10-rating, after watching how the votes were coming in each day, but in the end, it lost out on a 10 rating by just one single vote! So, as I always like to point out, your one vote can be a poll changer, and last week somebody’s late vote on Sunday nite, did the trick!

But this one was more like in the older days here when vote totals were super tight, as spots 8 thru 10 saw 93% of the total votes, and a 9 rating took first place. To see where this song is now located in the overall Stones song standings, just follow this link: Stones Song Ratings & Standings - List Page 5. Okay, so let’s now take a look at this week’s Beatles Poll, where we enter week 677 of voting, and week 111 of rating their songs. Here’s this week’s new question and song that we will rate: Rate the Beatles song, “Old Brown Shoe”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest)

“Old Brown Shoe” From one of the single's front covers

"Old Brown Shoe" is a song that was written by George Harrison, and recorded on 27, 28, 29 January; 25 February; for the Get Back/Let it Be sessions, and then finished up on 16, 18 April 1969 during the early sessions for Abbey Road, but didn’t show up on either album and was released as the B side to "The Ballad of John and Yoko", and also released in the States and in Canada in 1970 on the album Hey Jude.

When this one first came out, I didn't care too much for it - but like some songs that I don't care for too much at first (that was rare with Fab songs for me), in time I grew to dig this tune, thanks in part to what I thought was a lead Slide Guitar. Turns out that no, it isn't a slide, but just George bending the strings on his guitar, as he really didn't start to play true slide guitar until after these sessions were finished.

Ringo Starr doesn't appear on this track, as he was away from the studio filming a movie. Here is who ended up playing what on the song: George Harrison: Lead Vocal, 6 string Guitars, Bass Guitar, Organ; John Lennon: Piano and Backing Vocals; Paul McCartney: Drums and Backing Vocals and George Martin – Producer.

Looking at last week’s Beatles poll results. The question asked was: Rate the Beatles song, “I Call Your Name”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest)

“I Call Your Name” From BBC radio

Yep, another 10 rating for another Lennon/McCartney song. To see where in the standings this latest 10 rated song landed, click on the following link: The Beatles Song Ratings and Standings Page . Or, to take a look at the full, finial poll numbers, just go here: Beatles Poll, week 676.

So that does it for this week’s 2 new polls. I thank all of you who voted!

The Rock n Roll Hall of fame inductees were announced this afternoon. As usual, a few performers who I don’t even know got in, while a few I like did. I always dug Cher, and she’s in, as is Foreigner and solo Ozzy. Plus, Jimmy Buffett. A few others, including one with a Stones connection, Aleixis Korner. Plus the group that saw the least number of votes in the fan voting, A Tribe Called Quest, got in. I have no clue who they are, but what the fans really want never mattered with this Hall, I’m still waiting for the Monkees to get in, damn it! But the bottom line is the Hall lets in way too many artists each year, and many have no business being in there. They should have a limit of no more than 4 new inductees each year – period!

I hope you all have a great week ahead!
