Poll Post for the week starting Monday, Nov 14

Welcome to this week’s Poll Post! This week we'll get back to voting in 3 new weekly polls once again, in the Stones, Beatles and Rock Polls. We start off as usual talking about the Stones poll, where we enter week 1,215 of voting, and week 106 of rating the band’s songs, both the best - and the not so best songs. Here's this week rating question: Rate the Stones song “Winning Ugly” , from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).

“Winning Ugly” from 1986’s Dirty WorkLP

"Winning Ugly" was recorded in July and August of 1985, and then reworked on 3 months later in November and December of that year. It then was released on the album Dirty Work, on March 24, 1986. Now I know, just connecting it to the DW LP is a problem, since the album is the one and only Stones LP that most fans flat out either hate or at the least, dislike; an album that most never grew to even like a little. But you can't blame that on this one song when you rate it, either. So, I ask you to at least try to be kind to this tune and perhaps play and listen to the song where it's linked to at the voting page, and perhaps you will dig it a bit more today than in the past? That could happen for you, even if didn't for me when I played it again, but then again, I don't flat out hate this one, either.

When the entire DW album was being put together, drummer Charlie Watts was very bad off and in the mist of his heroin addiction and missed a lot of the LPs sessions (the photo of him on the album’s front cover says it all, as he looks flat out terrible and out of it). Both Ronnie Wood and session drummer Anton Fig, had to fill in for him on the drums on several songs, while the Stones management covered this up, claiming that Charlie was playing, with Wood only being credited for playing the drums on one track (when he played them on at least 2 or 3 cuts, but no, not this one. More than likely, it was Fig playing the drums on this song, as he played drums on several songs on DW while only being credited on the album sleeve as playing some percussion). Anyway, here is the lineup for this number (a lineup that might not be 100% correct because of what I just noted): Lead Vocals: Mick Jagger; Electric Guitars: Keith Richards and Ron Wood; Bass Guitar: Bill Wyman; Drums: Charlie Watts (or Anton Fig?); with the Synthesizer played by Chuck Leavell and the Background Vocals sang by Janice Pendarvis and Dollette McDonald.. Last week at the Stones weekly poll, we ran 2 polls that we will look at the results for now. Starting off with the first poll, the song rating poll, we asked this: Rate the Stones song “Fingerprint File” , from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).

“Fingerprint File” sheet music

" Fingerprint File ", kept the “10” rating streak going for the group, as it seems we always see 10s for most of their songs that we rate from the BJ and MT years and them most often, when we vote on the Ron Wood years - that’s it for any 10 ratings streak, since those songs rarely ever are given 10s by fans for the band’s newer songs (so far, only 3 of them have received a 10 rating).

To see and check out the final vote tally from last week’s first poll, just click on here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 1,214, Poll 1. Then, you can also check out the Stones song's rating standings and see where in the standings this song’s 10 rating ended up compared to the other songs that also scored a 10, by clicking on this link: Stones Song Ratings & Standings - List Page 5

For the second poll ran last week, the Stone’s old VS Poll, we asked this: “Shine A Light” vs “Get A Line On You”, which version of this Stones song do you like better?

VS

“Shine A Light” vs “Get A Line on You” Last week’s Stones VS poll question was about these 2 songs written about the late Stone, Brian Jones

In this special Stones VS song run last week, a poll question that I meant to ask long before the rating polls started up, well it was finally voted on last week. In close voting, “Shine A Light” barely beat out “Get A Line on You”, by just 2 votes. To see the poll’s final results, just click on here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 1,214, Poll 2. Or to see this in the Stones VS List page that this is listed on under “Battle of the Stones Songs!”, just click on this link: Stones VS Poll Listings - Page 2 .

Now let’s look at this week’s Classic Rock Poll, where we enter week 854 of voting and the finial part and week of our latest multi-week poll, where the question is asking this: What is the Best Rock Song about Outlaws or Criminals (Part 3 of 3)?.

Rock Songs about Outlaws or Criminals I used this wanted poster last week, even if this one doesn’t really apply to the question, as it isn’t easy coming up with a good photo for this question

.

For this final round of this question, we will have 25 songs to choose from (11 coming from Part 1 and 14 more from Part 2), 5 more songs than what is normal for a final round with 3 parts to it. But, I'll add, that all 25 songs are great picks (as is usually the case with our very smart voters). So, are you ready to vote on this one? To do so..... just click on the following link: Classic Rock Poll.

Last week at our Rock poll we asked What is the Best Rock Song about Outlaws or Criminals (Part 2 of 3)?.

Rock Songs about Outlaws or Criminals

Here are the 14 songs from last week's Part 2 that made the cut for this week’s final round: Midnight Rambler – Rolling Stones (197 votes with 6% of the vote); Down by the River - Neil Young (196 votes at 6%); Midnight Rider - The Allman Brothers Band (188 at 5.7%); I Don’t Like Mondays – Boomtown Rats (182 at 5.5%); The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde - Georgie Fame (182 at 5.5%); Bad Company - Bad Company (181 at 5.5%); Indiana Wants Me - R. Dean Taylor (181 at 5.5%); I've Gotta Get A Message To You - Bee Gees (181 at 5.5%); Bad Bad Leroy Brown - Jim Croce (180 at 5.5%); Excitable Boy – Warren Zevon (180 at 5.5%); I Fought The Law – The Bobby Fuller Four (180 at 5.5%); Jailbreak – Thin Lizzy (180 at 5.5%); Jailhouse Rock – Elvis Presley (180 at 5.5%) and Take the Money and Run - Steve Miller Band (180 at 5.5%).To see the full results from last week’s poll, just click on the following link: Classic Rock Poll, week 853. As is always the case, we finish up the Poll Post talking about this week’s Beatle Poll, where we enter week 605 of voting along with week 39 of rating the Beatles’ songs. This week we ask: Rate the Beatles song, “Strawberry Fields Forever”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).

“Strawberry Fields Forever” from 1967

"Strawberry Fields Forever" was written by John Lennon and released on 13 February 1967 as a double A-side single with "Penny Lane" (with both songs being nostalgic looks back at the band members' childhoods in England), after being recorded at EMI Studio (today renamed "Abbey Road Studios") first on 9 November, and then between December 8 thru 22, 1966. A Psychedelic-Acid rock song that was loved by fans as soon as it was released. Lennon based the song on a real place, recalling his childhood memories of playing in the garden and yard at Strawberry Field, which was a Salvation Army orphanage for children in Liverpool, England (and closed down in 2005). He would sometimes think, if it wasn't for his Aunt Mimi, his mother's sister, who took him in and raised him, that he might have ended up living there himself as a small boy.

One lyric in the song that some still wonder about, as to what the lyric might mean, was "…and nothing to get hung about", just what did that mean? It was inspired by Aunt Mimi's strict order to John not to play on the grounds of Strawberry Field, to which Lennon once replied to her, "They can't hang you for it" and of course, John kept playing there anyway, regardless of what his aunt wanted. John noted that the place always seem to be a very interesting place for him to visit, and it was located just across the street from where he lived, making his visits an every day thing.

After Lennon's death, a section of New York's Central Park was named after this well-loved song, and also for him. So, Strawberry Fields will live on forever in NYC at least, even if the old children’s home in Liverpool is now closed.

This song, produced by George Martin, had a bit of everything thrown into it, and unlike other Beatle songs, the band took a lot of time putting it together (more than 45 hours) with all kinds of sounds being used, including using reverse-recorded instrumentation, Mellotron flute sounds, an Indian swarmandal, tape loops with a fade-out/fade-in coda, as well as a cello and brass arrangement by Martin. For the song's promotional film (today such films are just called videos), the band used experimental techniques such as reverse effects, jump-cuts and superimposition. The song itself was made for their upcoming LP Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band , but then left off it and instead (thanks from pressure coming from their record company and management), the band was forced to only released it as a single and kept it off the album. Too bad, it would have been a perfect fit for that LP, indeed! The song was later included on the U.S. Magical Mystery Tour LP in 1967, to the disapproval of the band. As far as how this masterpiece did on the charts, you would think it would have sold better - at least in some places, anyway. It did sell well and reached #1 in seven different countries, but only made it to #2 in the UK and in the States, the best it did was to barely make the Top 10, at #8. But really, there is a lot more to talk about in putting together this song and it's recording, that I'm skipping over here, since I got to get this Poll Post finished and posted online now. So, if you’re a big Fab fan, I suggest you take the time to read about the making of this special, intresting song when you got the time.

In wrapping this up, the lineup for this tune was: John Lennon – Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Bongos, Tack Piano, Mellotron (at song's close); Paul McCartney – Mellotron (except at close), Bass Guitar, Piano, Lead Guitar (at the song's ending), Timpani, Bongos; George Harrison – Lead Guitar (for most of the song), Slide Guitar, Swarmandal, Timpani, Maracas; Ringo Starr – Drums and Percussion; with: Mal Evans – Tambourine; Neil Aspinall – Güiro; Terry Doran – Maracas; and with the Trumpets played by: Tony Fisher, Greg Bowen, Derek Watkins, and Stanley Roderick; plus the Cellos played by: John Hall, Derek Simpson, and Norman Jones…. Last week at the Beatles poll we answered this question: Rate the Beatles song, “We Can Work It Out”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).

“We Can Work It Out” from 1965

“We Can Work It Out”, like 36 of the 38 Beatle songs before it that we have already rated, saw a 10 for its top rating, taking in 56.7% of the vote. So that does it for this week's Poll Post. It was a bad week for me and my family, as our old, almost 16-year-old cat Cheezy, who lost his voice a while ago and now the vet has told us that either he gets radiation treatment done soon on his messed-up thyroid, or takes this pill once a day to survive. If we don’t do one of the 2 for him, he will die in about 6 months. The closest place where this treatment can be done is 4 hours away from where we live, back in our old stomping grounds of the Pikes Peak area, but the long drive alone would a problem for Cheezy, who doesn’t care for being in the car too long, along with the fact is this would take at least 3 days in the Springs to get this done, and it will cost a ton of money, too. But with the pill option, Cheezy should survive for 2 plus years taking one pill each day, and at his old age, that's the best bet and doesn't cost anywhere as much to do as the treatment does, other than the cat refuses to open up his mouth to take the pill once a day, and he would need this med every day for the rest of his life. So, I have no clue on what to do, pill wise. A 4-hour road trip driving through several mountain passe on snowy road conditions, is just not gonna happen with me behind the wheel, not until the late spring next year. The pill thing would keep him going until then and keep him healthy until that time. But he won’t let us give him the pill. So, anybody out there have any ideas on how to force a cat to take a pill once a day? I've tried to hide it in his food, but that doesn't work. We got this thing from the vet that shoots the pill into the cat's mouth, but I can't get his damn mouth to open to use it. Since 99% of you can't reply here, please email if you got any ideas on what you might suggest I do to get this cat to take his pill once a day, since it's the only way to save his life, and he's a great, loving cat and family member who we don't want to lose in the next 6 months. So goes life in old age for a cat - and his owner, I guess.

I hope everybody has a great week ahead!
