Poll Post for the week starting Monday, Aug 31

It’s Poll Post time as we open up a brand new week of polling, and as usual we will kick off this post talking about the Stones poll, which this week enters week 1,101 of voting and I will ask this question: “Miss You” - The long disco version vs the regular version. Which take/release do you like better?

VS

”Miss You”, Regular version VS Disco version

To those of you who know me well enough, you know how much I hate disco, especially when my favorite rock band plays it. Since I know my fellow Stones fans really well, my guess is 90% of them (if not more), also hate disco, including when the Stones try to play it. But with that said, and speaking for myself only, of all the Stones disco songs that the band made, the special long disco version of "Miss You" is the best of the bunch (I hate all of the rest) - and for me anyway, yes, I actually like this take of the song! The disco music heard playing on this tune is minimal - really borderline disco (but still disco, regardless), and for this number, I actually like the added in lyrics to this version of the song, even if some might say they're sexist, including the lyric "You know girls will come and go, they're just like streetcars!". Yep, Mick Jagger taking woman for granted once again, so what else is new?

Jagger wrote all of the the lyrics to this 1978 big hit single, and he co-wrote the music, all while Keith Richards got his usual credit for writing even if he had nothing to do with writing any of the song (again!). So, this was yet another case where either Jagger or Richards got credit for writing a song while a second person, who actually wrote it, got no credit at all. This time that other person was Bill Wyman (not the first time this happened to him). The main beat to the song was written by Bill, and Bill, who was never a fan of disco, actually went to a few discos just to understand how their bass lines went (after Jagger suggested this to him) and he learned from listening in those discos how the bass lines played. He then came up with the beat to the song and yes, this one was really a Jagger/Wyman composition, no question about it! Bill, like Brian Jones and Mick Taylor, had several of his riffs stolen away from him by the Glimmer Twins, and while this riff of his may not have been as big a steal of his music than say, his stolen riffs from "Jumping Jack Flash", or even "Paint it Black" (both of those songs’ riffs were written by Bill while playing organ, with help from Jones on PIB), it was still a big steal this time around never less, as this song went to #1 in the States and #3 in the UK (think of all the money he didn’t make on this song and all the green Richards did make for writing none of it)

But anyway, timewise alone, the special 12-inch single version of the song runs for more than eight minutes, while the album cut and regular single is a bit over the 4-minute mark…. So, which version of this song do you like the most? You can hear and compare the 2 takes of the song at the voting page and then vote by just clicking on the following link: Stones Weekly Poll.

Last week at the Stones poll we asked this question Which is better, the Stones official video for “I Go Wild”, or the director's cut, unofficial video for the same song?

From the Stones official “I Go Wild” vid , the one you seen often

From the Stones unofficial “I Go Wild” vid , the other video that you almost never see

Well, I think we all now know that the official release video for this song, while very good, isn’t as good as the unofficial made video, that for whatever stupid reason the Stones rejected. Really, you just got to look at both of them to see this is so. Anyway, the director's cut, unofficial video was ahead the entire week and, in the end, it prevailed and beat out the other video that the Stones decided to go with instead.

Let’s now head on over to this week’s Classic Rock Poll, where we enter week 741 of polling, and as usual for this one, we’ll be voting in 2 different Rock Polls…. In this week’s first regular Rock poll, we enter the final round of asking this question: What artist put out the best cover song ever? (Part 5 of 5)

Yep, the final week/round/part of this long running question is finally here! So after last week’s picks (see below) we will have a bit more songs than I care to list for a final round, but there were some ties and therefore we will have a total of 30 songs to choose from for round 5. Let me tell ya, I could vote for about 20 of these covers to be honest with you, even if I’ll only pick one myself. But damn did you voters pick some great cover songs for the final round!

In a nutshell, the King (aka Elvis Presley) lead the way with 4 covers making it to the final round, followed by the Stones and Janis Joplin with 3 each, and several other artists had 2 each listed. The great Beatles only had one song make it to the finials, but then again, they were the Beatles, and cover songs weren’t what they usually sang.

So, are you ready to see the final list of songs for Part 5, and then vote? To do that and take part in this first Rock poll, please click here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

For our second Rock poll of the week, we are running the VS polls. This week we will answer this question: “I'll Be Watching You” by The Police vs “One More Night” by Phil Collins. Which stalker song about a lost love is better?

VS

I'll Be Watching You VS One More Night

For this week’s VS poll, we look at 2 songs that both deal with guys who can’t accept the fact that they lost their lovers while refusing to let them go. For the Police’s song, this is clearly a story of a stalker who won’t leave his former love alone, insisting that she belongs to him and he will keep watching her. The Phil Collins number is pretty much about a different kind of stalker, where we have a guy who knows it’s over but doesn’t want to leave the girl alone while he begs her for just one more night with her, knowing that she has already moved on and may even be with another guy.

I was reading an interview with Sting, who wrote and sings The Police song, that he could never understand how some fans never understood what this song was about, how some fans would tell him the tune was their wedding song, thinking it was a love song! Are some people that stupid? Well yes, there are many such stupid people out there in the world today.

So which one of these songs do you like better? While I prefer that we compare both songs by the original releases, for the Collins song I did link to a live performance he sang at the Reunion Arena in Dallas, Texas in 1985. But damn, when Phil sings this it sounds as close to the studio take as one can get, so that’s why I went with this video. For the Police, it’s their old original video of the song, but do remember, we aren’t rating or comparing videos here, as they are only linked to so you can hear the song before you vote. To take part in this week’s verses poll, just click on this link: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this video question.

Last week in the first Rock Poll we answered this question: What artist put out the best cover song ever? (Part 4 of 5)

For the second week in a row, we saw a tie for the last spot where we get the top picks from for Part 5, so 9 songs instead of 7 made the list from last week, as 6th place saw a 4-way tie. Those songs are: The Animals cover of 'The House of the Rising Sun', traditional folk/blues song, writer unknown (6.4%), Elvis Presley's cover of 'Hound Dog', written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller (6.1%), Janis Joplin's cover of 'Piece of My Heart', written by Jerry Ragovoy & Bert Berns (aka Bert Russell) (6%), The Beatles cover of 'Twist and Shout', written by Phil Medley and Bert Berns (aka Bert Russell) (5.9%), Electric Light Orchestra's cover of 'Roll Over Beethoven', written by Chuck Berry (5.8%), Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's cover of 'Woodstock', written by Joni Mitchell (5.8%), The Byrds' cover of Turn! Turn! Turn!, written by Pete Seeger, along with a passage taken from the Bible (5.8%), The Door's cover of 'Backdoor Man', written by Willie Dixon (5.8%), The Who's cover of 'Summertime Blues', written by Eddie Cochran and Jerry Capehart (5.8%).

You can click on the following link to see the poll’s full results here and see the songs that missed out on making it into the final round, including one of my favorite Stones covers that just missed making the cut: Classic Rock Poll, week 740, Poll 1.

Last week at the VS poll, I asked and you answered this question: The White Album by The Beatles vs Exile on Main Street by the Rolling Stones. Which double album is better?

VS

The White Album VS Exile on Main Street

This one ended up almost exactly how I expected it to end up, with the Stones taking the lead in the first 2 days, then by mid-week we pretty much saw lead changes or ties for 3 more days, and then finally the Beatles’ great double LP won out in the final days by several votes. Yep, the Stones fans all vote early, week in and week out, while Beatle fans are the total opposite and usually don’t show up to vote till the week’s second half. I see this every week, the Stones poll always gets more votes Monday thru Wednesday while the Beatles poll sees most of its busy time after Wednesday, and sure enough, that’s what took place once again last week.

You can check out the full final results from this second poll, here: Classic Rock Poll, week 740, Poll 2. Or, to see the final results at one of the VS list pages, just go here: VS Page 3, List Page 15.

Lets close out this week’s Poll Post with the Beatles Poll. This week we enter week 492 of voting and this will be the last week of rating album covers and box sets for the Beatles, then next week we got an album cover verses poll to vote on, and then we might rate the covers to EPs. Not sure on that yet, since while EPs were so important to fans in the UK, with most of them going to #1 on the charts, if you live in the States, you might not even know what EPs are, as many U.S. fans never even heard of EPs, as such records are rarely sold on this side of the pond. While I myself know a lot about EPs from reading about them, I’ve never owned one, heard one play, and I never held one in my hands for that matter. As it was, only one EP by the Fabs were ever released in the U.S. in all of these years. So that's something for me to think about and if such a poll series rating EP covers should take place or not. As it is, we never rated such releases overall for their music (like we did LPs) before here, either. But then again, while U.S. fans know nothing about the UK EP releases (and that's why we never rated them before), as far as a cover to an EP goes - you don’t have to know anything about the product inside to rate a cover, since the cover is all we ask about - and as long as one's eyes work, that should be something anybody can rate. So, I got 2 weeks to make a decision on if we will run a series for UK EPs or not. But since I'm running out of good, new Beatles poll questions to ask, I'm leaning on doing this if only for that reason. As it was, I was half thinking of ending the Beatles poll in the next few weeks since I can’t think up great questions any longer. But the voters keep turning out in large enough numbers, really, the Fab’s poll has as many voters as the Stones poll has today, in some weeks the Beatle poll sees more voters, so how can I end it? So with 13 big selling UK EPs, it’s 50/50 that for the next 13 weeks I could be running that type of question.

Oh, I never did get to this week’s question! So, the last Box Set question that we will vote on is this: Rate the artwork for the front cover of the Beatles box set of The U.S. Albums

The U.S. AlbumsBox set front cover

I never understood why this one was even released (in 2014), since we already had The Capitol Albums, Volume 1 and Volume 2, which came out in 2006. I saw no need for it, since I had the 2006 release and so what if the songs were all remastered, they all sounded fine on the ’06 release…. But of course, only the cover matters here, so let’s rate it. I guess you can say it’s very American looking, well, right wing American looking (since they think that they own the U.S. flag), other than there’s long hairs in the picture, which most right wingers dislike. Clean cut is their game of course, but hell, what was long hair on men in the early ‘60s is short hair today. But with that aside, how will you rate this cover? To vote in this week's Beatles Box set/album cover poll, just click on this following link: Beatles Weekly Poll.

Last week at the Beatles poll, we voted on and answered this question: Rate the artwork for the front covers of the Beatles box set albums of The Beatles in Mono, and The Beatles (The Original Studio Recordings)

and

The Beatles in Mono, and The Beatles (The Original Studio Recordings) front covers

The top pick for the second week in a row was a 9, taking in 25.1% of the vote. To see this poll’s full results, just go here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 491Or to view the album cover rating standings on the Beatles List Page, click on: Favorite Beatles Album Covers List Page. The standings can be found up on the top of the page.

So now it’s time to close out this week’s Poll Post. Lucky for us in this part of Colorado, the heat wave finally broke in the last 3 days, and we had wonderful and much cooler weather since, making it feel more so like how the last week in August should feel, weather wise. So that put me in a good mood, for sure!... I do hope you all have a great upcoming week!
