"Ten" came together unlike any of album before or since. Before the band's line-up was formed, singer Eddie Vetter had lyrics written while guitarists Stone Gossard, Mike McCready & bassist Jeff Ament had written and recorded backing tracks in need of words. I don't recall the exact circumstances, but through another party Vedder, who did not know the other Pearl Jam members at the time, got hold of the Gossard-Ament tape and dubbed in his vocals / lyrics. Once they heard the results, Vedder was immediately hired on as lead vocalist. I recall that Kurt Cobain disliked Pearl Jam with a vengeance, although he singled out Vedder as a worthy writer and singer with real conviction who was misplaced in that band.
