Have we done this one before? Please forgive me if we have. But tonight I was just enjoying both of these classic bands and wondering which one is the better band with the greater and more enduring legacy.
AC/DC epitomize Rock n Roll like very few other bands. Their guitar heavy, keyboardless, somewhat over=produced sound just works on every level. They always have great vocals, and, like Van Halen, they have had multiple front-men - 4 of them if you count Axl Rose, who is now rumored to be working on an album with them.
Van Halen - also epitomizing Rock in most respects. The antics and audacity of David Lee Roth, combined with the virtuosity of Edward Van Halen made them into a house hold name.
Who is the greater band? For me it's Van Halen. Much more creative and ultimately more interesting. AC/DC are ALWAYS enjoyable but they do seem to release the same album over and over and over again. But the difference between AC/DC and other bands is that you want to hear that same sound. You do NOT want these guys to start experimenting, certainly not in their mid-60s.
I will always enjoy AC/DC but I give Van Halen the nod here.
