New Passwords are now needed to post!!

Okay Gassers, so as of now, the upgraded password system is in force and your old passwords will no longer work here anymore. So the first and most important thing to know is that you will need a brand new password to post here starting right now. Also please make sure you read this entire post so you understand everything that is new.

Here are a few things to know. First, the holdup on this new system was because the way I wanted it to work couldn’t be figured out, so it isn’t going to happen in that way at least for now. I wanted it set up to where you would be able to use any username/handle that you wanted to sign up with (and that part isn’t changed and stays the same), and where all Gassers would have to post using that handle all the time, while also using the password that you would have chosen yourself– along with your email address, and all of this would be connected to each other; in other words, all of them would have to match to post. But that isn’t to be since the people I hired to do this job couldn’t get the board’s old programming to work right with the programming they are using. They could get different parts to work, but not all of it at once, and that was the holdup and why it took so long to get to where we are today. I was told they would be able to figure this out in time, but it might take another 2 weeks, and I wasn’t willing to wait any longer so I decided all that wasn’t needed anyway.

Yes, it would have been cool if everybody could just pick their own passwords, but that won’t be the case after all, nor will the bit about the email address either, but I think most here would prefer that wasn’t used anyway.

Just one last thing to note before I explain the new password system, that is, there is nothing out there on the Net that is fool proof and 100% safe – nothing. I’m talking about everything – including the sites that you bank at, any kind of security system can be figured out and breached, including the system I wanted to use, and the new one I settled on. No, it isn’t going to be as easy to breach as it was before, but again, if a sick, bad person wants to bother a group of friendly, kindhearted and peaceful people like us, who are only trying to talk and be friends with each other, well I as the webmaster will do what I can to stop such people. But no, I nor anybody else can stop such nuts 100% of the time. I’m not saying that any mean-spirited person can figure out the new system, it isn’t likely, but again, anything is possible in this crazy word that we live in.

Okay, so signing up is still a pretty simple thing. Now, everybody will still have to re-sign up in the very same way new Gassers sign up, other than the sign up form we use is set up just a bit different now, even if it doesn’t look too different. You might only notice the changes after you hit the submit bottom, as the old page it used to bring you to isn’t used anymore. Plus now, you will receive almost instantly via email, a copy of the info that you just sent in to me to sign up with. If you found you made any mistakes when you get that email, write me back ASAP so I can fix it. If all looks cool, then you will just have to wait for the second email that you will get from me which will include your new password. Do make sure that you got your email address down right before you send in your form. Also, unlike the old days where free emails address like Yahoo and Gmail weren’t allowed, they are now, although I prefer you still use your main ISP email address instead.

Everybody reading this will get the first crack at signing up for a new password. So head on over to the sign up page now and do so! I suggest all you current Gassers use the same info you used when you first signed up here – that is, using the old email address, clue, etc, that you first used, as it will lead to a faster turnaround. Yes, you need to use the handle/username that you first signed up with, and I bet 99% of the current Gassers want to do just that. All of the old handles from the past will be reserved for whoever signed up for them. However, handles given out more than 3 years ago that haven’t been used in the last 10 months, will be up for grabs once again. So if you became a lurker in the last few years and haven’t posted in ages and have no plans to post again soon – but you still wish to keep your old handle, then you simply need to sign up again so I know that, and your old handle will not be given to another person.

Also note that not everything noted on the current registration page will apply to you current Gassers. You are all already registered and you should get your new password back fast enough. However, if you don’t hear back from me in 24 hours, do write me an email, since it shouldn’t take anywhere near that long to get a new password to you.

Everything else here will remain the same, if you’re a lurker who never had a password, well nothing changes for you. If you’re a former Gasser who has no plan to ever post here again and only wishes to read this joint, you also don’t have to do anything but keep on reading the board at your leisure – however, in time your old handle might be taken by another if you don’t re-sign up. If you’re okay with that, then I’m okay with that.

Now, I’m not sure when, but more than likely after the holiday weekend, I will email many of the current and former Gassers who haven’t gotten a new password yet and let them know what is up. If you haven’t posted in 5 years plus, you may not hear from me. Of course, for me to write anybody, I must still have your current email address to do so.

If you are a current Gasser and what to use a new handle from the one you have, I prefer you just stick with the one you already have, but if you have a great reason for wanting to change your handle, I can be talked into it. Just note that I can count on my hands the number of times this has been done since 1997. In the last 2 months I was being very lenient in letting people post here using any handle they wanted to use, since I knew the change was coming. Now that’s it here I will go back to how it used to be. If I notice that somebody is still using a handle that hasn’t been issued in the past, that handle will be removed and replaced with a blank space where their handle should be, until the person writes me and explains what is up and who they really are, in other words, what handle did they sign up with and why aren’t they using that handle anymore (I’m not going to spend my time looking to see who it is via passwords issued, which I could do if I had the time to waste, since it’s a lot faster to just do it this other way instead). I might or might not allow a poster to use the new handle they started to use without informing me, after they write me. So, if you are one of the 3 people who are doing this at the moment, please point that out to me when you sign up and I will see what we can do and work out.

After you get your new password, if you like, feel free to make a test post directly under this post. Also, and this is important, before you make your first post with your new password, I suggest doing this to make sure your old password is remove from your browser’s cache. First remove the old password, then unclick the box that reads “Check this box to save password” next to the form where you place your password. But, DO NOT reload the board or your old password will reappear! Just make sure your old password isn’t showing anymore, and once it is gone and you can see that for sure, enter your new password but do not recheck the box reading “Check this box to save password” again… not yet! First make a test post, when it works, then feel free to check that box with your new password in the password field… If you don’t do this in that matter, depending on the browser you are using, your old password might still be in there and get in the way without you realizing it, preventing you from posting, So I suggest you do it in this matter noted above*.

Okay, so I hope I remembered to note everything here; if I forgot something I will note it later on in a reply. So, it’s time for all you Gassers to get your new passwords! Here is the link to the registration page: http://www.keno.org/gasland/gasland_registration.htm where everybody can now sign up! I thank all of you for hanging in there and taking the time to re-apply for a new password.

*One extra note that I'm adding in here: What I noted about posting for the first time with a new password.... that bit is going to apply 2 times, since we have 2 places where we post, depending on if we are posting a new post on the form on the Home page, or in a reply to another person. So just keep that in mind, you might have to do that stuff for both forms!

Note: Do not hit the "Post Message" button more than once, even if it is taking a long time to post your message. Doing so may cause a double post to appear and could slow down your posting time even more.
