New mono box/SF/TY/Backing bands/Soul/Punk/Fabs

It’s time to get week 894 of the Stones poll underway, and as usual, we will vote on 2 different Stones poll questions. For our first Stones poll, the new question will be this: Do you plan to buy the new Stones mono box set, titled: The Rolling Stones in Mono?

A simple question for this week's Stones poll, to see how excited fans are (or aren’t) for this new box set. This new release will go on sale on September 30. It will feature all of their mono studio recordings released in the 1960s. So how excited are you for this release? Will you shell out the almost $200 asking price for this? Do note before you vote, that there will be no choice of "maybe" to choose from. If you're not positive yet on if you will buy this box set or not, then go with which way you are leaning as of today.

To cast your vote in this first Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

The week's second Stones poll will ask this: Sticky Fingers vs Tattoo You, which album do you like the best?

vs

The Sticky Polls return this week, featuring the 1971 masterpiece Sticky Fingers. This is the only Stones album in our standings to remain undefeated, and it has already taken on all of the best LPs the Stones have put out, so you gotta wonder if it will ever lose a round at this point. SF will look for its tenth win in this series as it takes on another strong fan favorite, 1980's Tattoo You. TY has a record of 5-1-1 and sits in third place in the standings, so yes, it's also doing very well in the voting. Can it tumble SF from the top of the heap and erase its undefeated status? We shall see...

To see the song list for each album, for Sticky Fingers, go here: SF, and for Tattoo You, go here: TY.

To cast your vote in this second Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Last week was a busy week in all of the polls, especially at the Stones poll. I noted here in the poll post last time that although we been averaging over 600 votes a week at the Stones poll this year (per poll), we still in all of these years have never seen the 700 mark in one week for this poll, and no, we still didn't see that last week. But, I also noted that the largest turnout ever in this poll was just 684 votes, and while we came very close to hitting that mark in the first Stones poll last week, we did surpass it in the second poll, with 688 votes. My making a post about the Rock poll late Friday night I guess added some votes to the Stones poll too. Funny, I never before posted about any of the polls that late in the week, but all of the polls seemed to benefit from that post, as we saw the busiest Saturday ever at the polls, the one day of the week where we usually see the least votes cast…. We also saw the highest vote count ever at the Rock VS poll last week, the only other poll where we still haven't surpassed the 700 mark yet in a week, while last week we did surpass the 700 mark at the Rock poll for the second week in a row, but the vote count there was far from any record. Finally at the Beatles weekly poll, the dislike for the series question continued there with a lower than normal vote total. But that series is now over, so I expect a rebound in the vote count there starting this week.

Looking back at last week’s first Stones poll we asked: Out Of Our Heads vs Some Girls, which album do you like the best?.

vs

Last week was the last week of the first run of the Crazy and Insane polls. What we learned in the last 6 week is that OOOH is doing very well in these matchups, even when going up against one of the giant Stones albums, like last week. A much closer result than I expected in this one… To see those results, go here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 893, poll 1. I’ll also add the results from this poll to the standings at the Stones VS Page 1, where at the top of the page you can check out the updated standings on how each album has done in these long running VS polls.

Last week at the Stones VS poll, we asked: Exile On Main Street vs Aftermath, which album do you like the best?

vs

Well as wonderful an album that Aftermath is, I think most of us figured the kind of outcome we ended up seeing in this poll. You can check out the final totals by clicking here:Stones Weekly Poll - week 893, poll 2. I’ll also add the results from this poll to the Stones VS Page 1 too, this is the same link noted above for the first poll.

At the Classic Rock Poll, we enter week 534, and as usual we’ll vote in 2 polls in this one too. The first question this week is: Which rock band was the best backing band of all time?

We got 55 bands listed for this poll to choose from, and most were studio bands only, but some did play both in the studio and live. Most of the bands listed were musicians, but some were only singing groups. I'm of course including bands that started out as a backing band for other artists, and then became popular and famous on their own and then were no longer a backing band (i.e. The Eagles, Toto, etc.). In those cases when you consider such a band, go with how the band performed as a backing band only. The few bands/groups that became famous first on their own, and then became a backup band because of a strong frontman, I'm not including, like The Animals (who later became Eric Burdon and the Animals), or The Supremes (later to be Diana Ross and The Supremes), since they were a main group first. The only exception to this is second phase of the Wailers band, who were 2 different bands. When they formed in 1963 with Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer and the others, they weren't a backup band at all. Then after all the original members left, Marley reformed the band as his backup band with new members, and by then they weren’t the same band anymore. When fans talk today about the first Wailers band, it's referred to as the "Original Wailers", and not the band who backed Bob later on.

So which backup band will you go with? Just click here to see the poll’s list: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

For this week’s Rock VS poll, it’s the second week of “The full of Soul, polls”, and the question is: R&B/Soul/Motown vs Punk, which music genre do you like more? .

This week’s addition of the genre music polls has soul music up against the sound of Punk, which is one genre in music that is really a form of its own. "No discipline music", that's what I call Punk, and in that sense, R&B/Soul/Motown is its opposite.

Which genre would you rather listen to? To vote in this VS poll, just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll, we asked: Who was the best of the uncredited or under-credited rock musicians and singers?.

Well the bottleneck we had in this poll on Friday night for the top 10 spots was pretty much broken up (but not totally) thanks to the new voters I wrote to on Friday nite, and who did vote (thank you!). We did end up with 2 clear choices for the 2 top spots, but there was a 4 way tie for third. The top pick for this question was Derek St. Holmes, who was the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for Ted Nugent on all of his hits and most of his songs. Dick Wagner was the second pick, just one vote behind St. Holmes. He’s the main guitarist you have heard on songs for Alice Cooper, Lou Reed, Aerosmith, KISS, and other rockers.

You can check out the tie for third place and the full, final results from this Rock poll by clicking here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 533. You can also check out the final results at the Top Ten Lists, Page, 11.

In last week’s Rock VS poll, we asked: R&B/Soul/Motown vs Heavy Metal, which music genre do you like more?

I noted above that we saw a record vote count at this poll too last week, so a good question I see, indeed. We had a landslide result for the host genre. To see the final results from this VS Rock poll, click here: Classic Rock VS Poll, week 533. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

We close out this poll post as usual with the Beatles poll, where it’s week 287, and this week’s brand new question is: 'Good Night' vs 'Golden Slumbers', which Beatle song is a better lullaby?

Notice how the poll's question is worded. We are not looking for the better rock song, or the better overall Beatle song here. We are looking for the best lullaby only. Yes, both songs are clearly lullabies, John Lennon wrote "Good Night" for his young son Julian, while Paul McCartney was inspired to write "Golden Slumbers" after he found an old lullaby/poem in a book of sheet music for piano.

For "Golden Slumbers", the poem/lullaby that it came from was called "Cradle Song". Since Paul never could read music (I never could totally believe this, but the story's been told over and over again), he wrote his own music for the song but kept about half the words from the poem. Seems that the poem was written way back in 1603 by Thomas Dekker (who should have been credited on the album, IMO), while music was added to the piece in 1916. Paul sings "Golden Slumbers" in a very strong voice, and it shows up in the medley on the band's 1969 album Abbey Road, making this short ditty (1:31) seem longer than it us.

On Lennon's "Good Night", Ringo Starr sings the lead vocals. According to the other 3 Beatles in interviews they have made about this song, John brought the song into the studio one day and sang it to them, and they claimed they were totally moved by his vocals - which sadly weren't recorded. Supposedly he sang this song better than any other song that they ever heard him sing before, singing it in a very mellow, tender voice. Paul claimed that John from the start wanted Ringo to sing the song, and when he sang it to the group, it was so Ringo would know how to sing it. Paul claimed John felt that the tune was too tender a song for him to sing. Years later, just before his death, John pretty much confirmed this, while noting that another song he had just recorded, this time written about his second son, called "Beautiful Boy", was sang in the same way as when he first sang "Good Night" for his mates back in ’68, and by 1980 he felt okay singing in that way on record.

The first recorded take of "Good Night", with Ringo on lead vocals, featured John on guitar, the second take featured John on the piano, and that version was released on the Beatles Anthology 3 album. The cut most of us know, was released as the last song on the Beatles White Album in 1968, with Ringo being the only Beatle on the track, as by then, John got producer George Martin to put an orchestra together to record the music for the song. It's one of 8 Beatle songs that feature only one Beatle on it.

In last week's Beatles poll we answered this question: What is your least favorite song on the Beatles LP Hey Jude

Well that unpopular question is now all over with. It may not have worked so well in the polling, but the results work well on the web page I stuck the results on. Yes, a neat list to check out, just no fun to vote in. But if you would like to see the final results to this final round, where we asked about the Hey Jude album, please go here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 286. Or, you can check out the least favorite song at the Beatles list page that I write about above, just click on "Songs per LP" , located at the domain’s Lennon Site. There you can see all of the favorite and not so favorite songs listed per album, as voted on by fans.

Well that does it for this week’s poll post. Thanks to all for voting! I hear most of the Midwest and eastern US has been very hot the last week, that’s too bad. Out here it’s been perfect weather, no clouds in the sky for 4 straight days, with temps in the low 70s along with low humidity, the best weather we’ve seen for the entire summer here! I hope everybody has a great upcoming week ahead and that it cools off some east of here!
