I have experience in trying to get a few of my loved ones to stop, but not myself, since I never smoke enough to be addicted to cigarettes. Some say if you never been there and wasn't ever addicted to whatever it is you are trying to get others to stop, then you just don't understand how hard a battle it is to win and get them to stop. I failed with my first wife, she started smoking at 14, and for about 30 years I tried to get her to stop. Getting her to smoke less was easier to do than her going cold turkey. She was never allowed to smoke in the house, in the car, or in front of the kids, so she did smoke less each day because of that, but I could never totally get her to stop. She would say to me "I'll stop smoking when they throw dirt in my face". Well, she did finally stop, 10 years before lung cancer killed her. She had COPD by then and when they told her she had to use oxygen all day long and that she only had so many years left, that got her to finally stop - on her own. But it was already too late for her, she was diagnosed with cancer 4 years later and was told she could die as soon as before the year was out, or she might live another 5 years at the most. She lasted 6 full years, and I believe if she hadn't quit smoking, she would had died a lot sooner than she did. Then my second wife also smoked, and I never could get her to stop either. Today, and since the day she started smoking at 16, I've tried to get my oldest daughter to stop smoking, and I can't get her to stop anymore than I could get her mother to. She has tried and tried to stop and just can't let it go.
So I wish your friend the best, but with a lot of people, unless they are looking Mr D directly in the eyes, they aren't going to stop, and you can bitch at them till the cows comes home, but that's one thing that doesn't work at all.
