12x5/Acoustic guitars/Time/Fab lyrics

It’s time to start up week 813 of our Stones poll, and the final week (6) of the Undercover Polls, where we are placing this 1983 LP up against other Stones albums. So this week’s question is:

vs.

Undercover vs 12x5, which album do you like the best? Released in 1964, 12x5 was the Stones second American album, and, as the title indicates, it contained 12 new Stones songs, mainly covers, but also 5 of which were written by Jagger/Richards, or by the entire band. The Stones first version of "Time Is on My Side", the organ version, was found on here, along with the very popular cover of "It's All Over Now".

So which of these 2 LPs is your favorite? To vote, just click on here: Stones Weekly Poll.

vs.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: Undercover vs Emotional Rescue , which album do you like the best? . Undercover is having a very hard time in these VS polls, as it was defeated by a rather large margin last week. To find out by how much, just click on this link: Stones Weekly Poll - week 812 . You can also check out where the 2 albums are in the updated standings at the Stones VS List Page .

Now let’s head over to the Classic Rock Poll, where it’s week 455, and as usual, we will vote in 2 different polls for the week. In the first poll, we are still voting on what is the longest multi-part poll question ever asked at our polls - looking for the best acoustic guitar(s) heard in a Rock song, which tonight reaches into week 6.

The question is: What's the best acoustic guitar(s) heard in a Rock song? (Part 6 of 7) t

This is the last week where we will vote to find the top songs out of 30 listed that will then end up in next week’s final part.

This Part 6 was actually first written up as Part 2, until I found that I had deleted by accident the poll hours before it was supposed to be voted on. So as I noted here at the time, I just moved up each week’s part a week each, and in time figured out about half of the songs and guitarists that I had first listed in this poll when it was set to be run as Part 2. Then I had another bunch of songs/guitarists that I thought up and now got a full list of 30 choices to choose from. But you can bet I missed a few that I originally had listed, so with this being the last week of new choices being offered for this question, if you can think of a song that should have been voted on but that I missed, please suggest it ASAP, and I’ll add it in .I already know that I didn’t remember all of the songs that got deleted, so I’m sure one or two great choices are still out there for perhaps somebody else to remember for me.

Now the same repeat from the first 5 weeks for anybody who has never voted in these polls before… This multi-part poll is being run in the usual way such polls are run, the top songs chosen from each of the first 6 parts will go up against each other in Part 7. How many songs taken from each part will depend on how the voting turns out, but I’m thinking the top 5 or 6 will make the cut as long as they get at least 6% of the vote each, so we shall see.

Remember, do not pick your favorite song from the list, we aren’t looking for that, we want what you think is the best acoustic guitar played only. To see the list for Part 6, and to vote in this week’s first Rock poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

In this week’s VS poll the new question asks: 'Time Has Come Today' (by The Chambers Brothers) vs 'Time Waits For No One' (by The Stones), which song is better? In the last week where we are looking at songs in this poll that involve the Stones, I’ll combine that with the fact that today started Daylight Saving Time here in the US (which I personally hate) and as you can see both of these original songs deal with time.

The Chambers Brothers’ 'Time Has Come Today', was written by Joe & Willie Chambers, and recorded in 1966 and resulted in 4 different versions. The first version was released in 1966, followed by the second take of it which was released in ’67 on their album The Time Has Come, with the third and fourth versions released a year later in ’68 as A and B side single, with the shorter take played on the AM radio stations and becoming a big hit, landing at #11 and staying there in that spot for several weeks, yet it never reached the top 10! In the link to the song at the voting both will be the 4th and longest version, at 11 minutes long, but if you just want to hear the hit single only, well it’s simple to do, just play the YouTube link up to about the 3 minute mark, it's the very same as the single up to there, and this is where the single nears it ending, so to hear that ending, just skip over to about the 9:30 or so mark in the song and then play it to the finish, and you got the single (and a total combined time wise of about 4:45), while skipping 6 minutes of some interesting music and noise that is in the long version of the song.

For the Stones song, it was written in 1973 by The Glimmer Twins and recorded at that time, but it wasn’t released until ‘74 on the It's Only Rock and Roll LP. A very mellow number, Mick Taylor wrote the beautiful guitar solo that he plays, and of course, he wasn't credited for it, and which more than likely helped to make him decide to quit the band after this album was finished…. Ray Cooper provides a nice ticking sound at the beginning and ending of this song which sounds almost as good as the ticking sound heard in the beginning of the Chambers Brothers song. In both cases, cowbells were used to make this sound, in the Stones song just one, with 2 used on the Chambers Brothers tune.

So which one of these songs do you like more? To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: What's the best acoustic guitar(s) heard in a Rock song? (Part 5 of 7) Only 6 songs/guitarists from Part 5 will make it to the final round, they are: ‘Over the Hills and Far Away’ - Led Zep - Acoustic Guitar by Jimmy Page (11.6%); ‘Sweet Virginia’ - The Stones - Acoustic Guitars by Keith Richards and Mick Taylor (10.4%); ‘Girl’ - The Beatles - Acoustic Guitars by John Lennon and George Harrison (10.2%); ‘Suite: Judy Blue Eyes’ - Crosby, Still, Nash - Acoustic Guitars by Stephen Stills and David Crosby ( 10%); ‘Hotel California’ - The Eagles - Acoustic Guitars by Glenn Frey and Don Felder (9.8%), and ‘Sound of Silence’ – Simon And Grafunkel – Acoustic Guitar by Paul Simon (8.9%)

In last week’s VS poll, we asked: 'Just My Imagination' (by The Temptations) vs 'Just My Imagination' (by The Stones), which version is best? The final results weren’t as close as you might have figured they would have been.

To see which cover of this great song ended up on top, just click on: Classic Rock VS Poll week 454. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

We close out this post as usual with the Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 208, and we enter week 2 of a 5 week poll questions that asks this: What's your favorite lyrics from a Beatles song? (Part 2 of 5) . Damn the Beatles had some great lyrics, and it is very hard choosing just one out of this bunch listed! I noted last week about the problem with listing an entire lyric in the choice field since our polls do have a character limit and the admin allows me to list only so much per field. So just as the case was last week when we asked this question, to fit all of the lyrics in the poll, I had to run words together, but that doesn’t cause any real problem since most voting know the lyrics. However, and this is yet another repeat from last week’s post…. I do understand that many who vote, still use old and outdated browsers, and that adds up to another problem for those who haven’t updated their browsers yet. If you should have a problem reading the choices, then just visit the poll’s archive page, where the choices will display fine, since a pull down menu isn’t used there. Only problem with this is you will see the poll’s results before you vote, and I hate that since it gets some to change their vote for that reason only. But if you do have this problem, you can go here first to read the choices, and then after that you can return to the voting page, and cast your vote.

Okay, now for most us who do have a modern day browser, to vote in this week’s Beatles poll without having to use the above link, just use this simple, normal link to vote: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Beatle poll we asked: What's your favorite lyrics from a Beatles song? (Part 1 of 5) I love the top choices that were made last week in Part 1, which will all be voted on again in Part 5 of this question. Normally here I list what the choices are, but since we are talking about a lot of text, I’ll just list the top 2 choices here and you can go directly to the poll’s result page to see where the rest all landed. The top 2 picks, both written by John Lennon, were tied for first place with 6.8% of the vote each, here they are: “Semolina Pilchard climbing up the Eiffel Tower, elementary penguin singing Hare Krishna, man you should have seen them kicking Edgar Alan Poe. I am the egg man, they are the egg men, I am the walrus”… plus….. “She asked me to stay and she told me to sit anywhere, so I looked around n I noticed there wasn't a chair. I sat on a rug biding my time drinking her wine, we talked until 2 and then she said 'It's time for bed’”. Of the 8 song lyrics that scored enough votes for Part 5, 6 were written by John and one each written by George and Paul

Well for those of us who live in the US, we have one less hour to live this week thanks to the time change, with the real difference (and pain in the ass) being getting use to the lack of light in the morning. Yeah, everybody has to turn on all of their lights in their home when they get up in the morning now, so just where are we saving money? Plus our kids have to head out to school in the dark, and this morning darkness also kills the ski resorts morning business, so just what are we saving again? I tell ya, DST is against nature, it should not be used, as standard time is the only real, correct time. Okay, enough bitching about this, I hope everybody has a great upcoming week, and as usual, thanks to all of you who vote each week in our polls!
