Undercover/TY/Acoustic Guitar songs/Fab stuff

Weather wise, we had a beautiful weekend here with record high temps in the lower 50s, it felt like spring and because of this and my temporary working my old 800 job for the next 2 weeks, I didn’t get around to building and publishing the new polls for this week until late today, and thanks to a major mistake I made, which I’ll explain when I write about the Rock Poll, I only got this week’s polls build just 3 hours ago.

But anyway, it is now time to talk about week 809 of the Stones poll where enter week 2 of the Undercover Polls, where we are placing this 1983 LP up against other Stones albums. This week’s question is:

vs.

Undercover vs Tattoo You, which album do you like the best? Tattoo You was release in 1981 and was made up of unreleased songs that went as far back as 1972. If you missed the first post of this month, under the title “Recording ‘Start Me Up’ - Cool Article, posted by devilsadvocate”, you can read up on the LP some more there, but I think we all know about this LP well enough as it is.

So of these 2 LPs, which one to you like more? To vote, just click on here: Stones Weekly Poll.

vs.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: Undercover vs The Rolling Stones, Now!, which album do you like the best? . Well, Undercover, in the first week of the Stones VS poll series to be name after it, it didn’t do too well going up against this early Stones album .

To see the final results from this poll, just click on this link: Stones Weekly Poll - week 808 . Plus you can also check out where the 2 albums are in the standings at the Stones VS List Page .

Over at the Classic Rock Poll it’s week 451, and we’ll again run the usual 2 polls per week. For the first poll, well this is where I totally messed up! Late this afternoon as we got back from hiking in the snow and mud (thanks to the warm temps here) I remembered that I hadn’t yet build this week’s polls, but they were all ready to go and I figured I’d better do them real fast before I started to make the family dinner. On Friday I had all 4 new polls set and ready to be built inside the poll file where I store them until I’m ready to publish them online. So I sat down for what should have been a 10 to 20 minute job, but instead I found that somehow on Friday, when I saw it last, Part 2 of this week’s Rock poll was now gone and nowhere to be found in the poll file! To my horror (well, maybe that’s too strong a word, but all I can think of using right now), I somehow deleted Part 2 of this poll question along with all 28 songs that were listed!

As I’m sure you all recall, last week we started voting on what is the longest multi-part poll question ever asked at our polls - looking for the best acoustic guitar(s) heard in a Rock song, which will run for 7 weeks/parts. I noted here last week how compiling this poll took longer than any other poll I’ve ever put together, and for the first time since 1999, it had to be this week and for this poll question where I did something that I have never done before, I lost the damn poll that was supposed to start up in just a few hours’ time! Holy shit, how did I possibly do this? Well, on Friday, I think when I went to cut and past the poll question up higher in the file I use, I must have been distracted and never pasted it into the spot I was moving it to. Then I closed the file and it was lost forever. Yep, somehow I did that, so what was I to do now? Well, to cover for this week, since the entire poll parts were all finished and ready to go, this week I’ll just run the poll that was set to run in Part 3. That was easy to figure out, but how the hell was I supposed to figure out and remember which 28 songs were missing from the original Part 2? Well off the bat I could recall about 4 or 5 songs, and for the Stones and Beatles, all I had to do was look up the top picks from when I asked this same question at their 2 polls, as their songs listed in this 7 part series came from these old polls, and sure enough I found them 2 real fast. Then “Maggie May” by Rod Stewart came on the radio and I remembered instantly this was another missing song, and I slowly started to backtrack on how I at first put this poll together and as of now I have come up with 14 of the missing songs for sure, plus I found another 18 songs that I had at one time on the list, but I had removed about 50 songs from the list I first had since that list was too long (it had over 200 songs on it at one point). The thing is, not all of these songs I now have were left on the list, and I know I’m still missing several songs, but I can’t be sure what they are and chances are against me finding them all. So anyway, I’’ll have enough to run this “lost” part in week 6, ,and in the meanwhile, if I hear a song or two that I’m missing on the radio, then that would be great, too. Plus, when Part 6 comes around, if you notice a great acoustic guitar song that we never got to vote on because it was missing, please let me know and I’ll add it in to Part 6!

So anyway, this week’s question is: What's the best acoustic guitar(s) heard in a Rock song? (Part 2 of 7) So yes, this week’s choices were really set for Part 3, but it really doesn’t matter when we vote on them, and this bunch to choose from is a dandy! You’ll want to vote for several of these songs, no question about it, but you gotta pick just one!

Now a repeat from last week: This multi-part poll is being run in the usual way such polls are run, the top songs chosen from each of the first 6 parts will go up against each other in Part 7. How many songs taken from each part will depend on how the voting turns out, but I’m thinking the top 5 or 6 will make the cut as long as they get at least 5% of the vote each, so we shall see.

Remember, do not pick your favorite song from the list, we aren’t looking for that, we want what you think is the best acoustic guitar played only. To see Part 2’s list and vote in this week’s first Rock poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

In this week’s VS poll the question asks: 'Yesterday' (original by The Beatles) vs 'Yesterday' (cover by Ray Charles), which version of this song is best? Week 3 of placing a Beatle song up against a cover of the same Beatle song. Paul McCartney wrote this song and is the only member of the Beatles to appear on its recording. Paul first wrote the music to the song, but could not think of a name for it, or think up any lyrics for it either, so he just called it “Scrambled Eggs” until he could think up lyrics and a title. According to Paul, John came up with the title “Yesterday” one day as a joke, mainly become the other Fabs were getting sick of his working on this song and overreacting to it, as John, George, and Ringo grew tired of the music he came up with and his not even being able to name it, so to John, this song Paul was working on was from yesterday and the band wanted it to stay there and not have anything to do with it. But Paul got a spark from the title that John came up with and then he wrote the lyrics quickly after that. The song was recorded by Paul alone and was really a solo Paul song, and the other 3 Beatles refused to allow it released as a single in the UK since they felt it did not suit their image But it was released in the US and it topped the American chart in 1965. It finally got issued as a single in the UK in 1976, making it to #8. Lennon made reference to the song in his put down song to Paul "How Do You Sleep?", when the 2 weren’t getting along, shortly after the Beatles broke up. In Lennon’s song while going after Paul, he sang "The only thing you done was Yesterday, but since you've gone you're just Another Day" , while “Another Day" was the first single Paul wrote for his solo career.

“Yesterday” is today the most covered Beatle song, with over 2,200 cover versions out there! So I had a very big pool of artists to choose from to put this up against. Why did I end up with Ray Charles’ version? Because I think he did the best job in covering it, better than any of the other ones I’ve heard. Ray released his cover of “Yesterday” in 1967 on his album Invites You to Listen , and it was a hit, reaching #25 on the chats, and #9 on the R&B charts. Charles was sick and losing his voice when he recorded this song, so it was recorded by him with a hoarse voice, but ended up sounding great anyway!

So which version will you go with? To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: What's the best acoustic guitar(s) heard in a Rock song? (Part 1 of 7) I see everybody likes this question, and I’m not surprised at all. At least the top 5 spots from this poll, which includes 6 songs, will make it to Part 7, with the last 2 that you will see listed here, maybe making the cut, just depends on space, so here they are: Here Comes The Sun - The Beatles - Acoustic Guitar by George Harrision (13.3%), Wild Horses - The Rolling Stones - Acoustic Guitars by Keith Richards and Mick Taylor ( 13.3%); Midnight Rider - Allman Brothers Band - Acoustic Guitar by Duane Allman (6.2%); Lola - The Kinks - Acoustic Guitars by Ray Davies and Dave Davies (5.9%); All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix - Acoustic Guitars: J. Hendrix (6 string)/Dave Mason (12 string) (5.2%), Behind Blue Eyes - The Who - Acoustic Guitar by Pete Townshend (5.2%); America – Simon And Grafunkel – Acoustic Guitar by Paul Simon (5%), Take It Easy - The Eagles - Acoustic Guitars by Glenn Frey and Bernie Leadon (5%).

Last week in our VS poll we asked: 'Come Together' (original by The Beatles) vs 'Come Together' (cover by Aerosmith), which version of this song is best? It is very hard for just about any artist to beat the Beatles at their own game, do you think Aerosmith might be able to squeeze out a win over them here? To see if that happened, just click on: Classic Rock VS Poll week 450. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

Now to the Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 204, and the question asks: Which Beatles song listed has the best lyrics? (Part 3 of 4) . Part 3 will be run just like Parts 1 and 3 were, and we cover Beatle song titles in the alphabet from “S” to “Y” this week.

To make your pick and vote in Part 3 of this poll, just click on: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Beatle poll we asked: Which Beatles song listed has the best lyrics? (Part 2 of 4) 9 songs got enough votes to make it to Part 4, and like last week, the top songs were mainly written by Lennon, so here they are: I Am the Walrus (13.8%); Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (13.5%); Let it Be (12.1%); Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) (11.7%), Revolution 1 (11.7%); Penny Lane (6.2%); I'm So Tired (6%); Nowhere Man (5.6%), I Want To Tell You (5.4%).

To see the full results from this poll, click on: Beatle’s Weekly Poll – week 203.

As usual, I thank all of you who took/take part in the voting each week! It sure is a lot of fun seeing how the answers to our poll questions turn out each week!
