Nirvana always was and still is overrated fluff, only to a slightly lesser degree than Pearl Jam. (TEN especially, but also Nevermind kind of, however, still remain somewhat enjoyable albums).
In the 90s, the Pumpkins were pretty "smashing," compared to Nirvana, especially Mellon Collie and Adore. Cobain may have had the right aesthetic and attitude to bear the weight of a symbolic cultural figure in music, but Corgan definitely was the better guy in terms of songwriting and musicality.
