Isaac Hayes' HBS is an incredible album, and for its time was certainly an experimental hybrid of musical styles. Taking a country-pop tune such as "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", then giving it a mood-altering R&B treatment with a pronounced psychedelic twist was definitely breaking some new ground. I enjoy Hayes' other albums as well, but for me this one is tops.
