I too say "it's about the performance". I'll happily scoop up copies of awesome performances even if they are lousy sound quality, recorded by some stoned dud in the 41st row holding a "Realisticⓡ" microphone. But a great performance recorded in bad sound quality still sounds... bad! And while we may admire it's artistic merits, its kind of hard to rock out to it and I know I'll put it aside when those urges to rock out come upon me.
