He was a great great player, american champion at 14 I think. It was a pity he was such a difficult person, and disappeared from the game. I think before he died he had come to hate chess.
If you take an objective measure i.e. highest ever gradings, then Fischer wouldn't be the all time greatest player, but gradings don't tell the full story, they are just statistics. I think there is a good argument for Fischer being the overall best player ever, but that could be said of a few others also.
Garry Kasparov held the highest ever grading for a long while. I think currently the honour is with Magnus Carlsen, the present World Champion. I suspect Kasparov could still be World Champion if he hadn't moved into politics. He dominated the chess world, and could have put himself in a position where there would have been no argument as to who was the best ever.
