Stones negro spirituals/Acronyms/Baby Blue/Lennon

Tonight we enter week 765 of our Stones poll, and this week the new question comes from a fan suggestion, it asks: What is your favorite Stones song in the style of gospel/negro spirituals? It’s become rare when a new poll suggestion comes in by a fan, ever since I took down the poll suggestion page many years ago. But I still get them in every so often, yet it seems usually the suggested question was already asked many years earlier. But not this one, and I thank domain friend and sometime album reviewer Timothy Getz for sending this one in, it just so happens the last time we used a Stones poll fan question, it also was one of his, about 2 years ago.

The thing is, none of this week’s poll, including its choices, came from me, as I usually do add to whatever is suggested, but not this week, and perhaps the first poll ever run here that I have no hand in (other than building the poll and publishing it), all 7 song choices come from Tim. All of these songs make for excellent picks, and even with just 7 choices, it’s still gonna be hard to pick just one.

Negro spirituals are basically where Rock ‘n Roll music came from many years ago when the 19th century American salves would sing them as they worked in the cotton fields. I did try to think for a moment if the Stones did more than just 7 of these songs throughout the years, but I really never did have the time to realty think good and long enough about this, so I’ll go with what we got there…. Oh, and yes, someday in the distant future this will make for a great Rock poll question, too.

So which song will you pick? To vote, click here: Stones Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Stones poll, we asked: Undercover of the Night (Violent, banned video) vs Undercover of the Night (Non-Violent, band video), which video do you dig more?. Well, the final result wasn’t really close at all, click here to see which video was chosen, and by how much: Stones Weekly Poll - week 764 – poll results. You can also check out the final results from this poll at the Stones VS Page under the new section made up for videos.

Over to the Classic Rock Poll, where it’s week 407, and as usual we will run the normal 2 poll questions. Our first question is: What is the best rock song title that contains either an acronym or abbreviation in its title? . This is one of those questions that we usually have a bit of fun with, as it’s hard to guess which choice will be the top pick in the end. That’s in part because we are not asking for the best song listed, or your favorite, just whatever title you think is the best one.

Of the 38 choices, only 4 titles are abbreviations, the rest are all acronyms, as I didn’t go with common abbreviations in the poll, like “I’ve”, or “We’ve”, etc, but then again, some would argue that “USA” is an abbreviation, too, but officially no, it’s an acronym. Also, purposely misspelled titles are not included in this list, if they were, we would have to list pretty much every song made by Slade.

Now remember, don’t pick the song you like most, only go with what you feel is the best titled song. So which song title with an acronym or abbreviation in it will you go with? To vote, just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

For our second Rock Poll question, we have the usual VS poll, and this week we continue looking over the many songs written by Bob Dylan that have been covered by others. So this week’s VS question asks: 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' (original by Bob Dylan) vs 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' (cover by The Animals), which version is best? I wasn’t sure which of the many different covers of this excellent song to go with this week, since several of them are well known, so I went with the cover that I always felt was sung best, that being the version released by the Animals back in 1977, with Eric Burton on vocals. This song was released on a reunion studio album put together by the old band with all of its original members called Before We Were So Rudely Interrupted, which was a very strong album.

Dylan’s original folk take of the song was released in 1965, with only a bass player playing along with him on the track as he played guitar and harmonica, and sang the vocals. Like so many of his early songs, many fans wondered who this was written about, and it’s mainly believed that it was for his former girlfriend, Joan Baez.

As usual there will be video links to each song in the voting booth so you can have a listen before you vote. To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s Rock poll, the first question asked was this: What is the best Rock song written about Hippies? (Part 3 of 3) Although I didn’t vote for it, perhaps “Woodstock”, the song chosen, was the best pick, as the event itself marked the moment when half a million hippies not only all united in one spot, but were at their strongest point. The song was written by Joni Mitchel and covered by CSNY, and was a giant hit for them…. This poll was very close all week, and every song listed did well in the voting, with CSNY also taking second place, with the David Crosby number “Almost Cut My Hair”, with third place going to “Going Up the Country”, by Canned Heat, written and sung by Alan Wilson, who of course wasn’t their normal lead singer, but who sang lead (and wrote both) of their 2 biggest hits, including this one.

To check out the very close and final poll numbers, just click on the following link: Classic Rock Poll week 406. Or, to just view the Top 10 Songs only from the list, click on Top Ten Lists, Page, 9.

In last week’s VS poll we asked: 'If Not For You' (original by Bob Dylan) vs 'If Not For You' (cover by George Harrison), which version is best? So would Dylan for the send week in a row have his original take of his song picked first again? To find out, just click here : Classic Rock VS Poll week 406 . You can also check out the final results at the Classic Rock’s site’s VS page.

We end this week’s poll post the way we always do, talking about the Beatles’ weekly poll, where it’s week 160, and the question for the next 10 weeks will be the same, as we will search for the best sung Beatles song by first voting for the best one song sung by each Beatle, then in the last week of voting putting the top 4 songs chosen for all 4 Fabs up against each other and see who’s singing is picked, So this week’s question is: Of the Beatles songs that John sings lead on, which one do you feel he sang the best? (Part 1 of 4) When a young kid today asks who was the lead singer of the Beatles, us old-timers would say it was both John and Paul equally, since that was true in the last 2 or 3 years of the band. But overall, that wasn’t true, as John clearly sang the most lead vocals, so many that it will take a full month to vote on all of his songs (Paul’s songs will take 3 weeks, and George and Ringo’s one week each).

We will list the songs John sang lead on going by alphabetic order, with 29 songs to choose from this week. To vote, just click on: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Beatles poll we asked: Tiebreaker poll: What are your favorite lyrics from a John Lennon written song? Once again, the final results for this question was super close, with only 8 votes separating the top pick from the last spot. The top choice ended up being ” Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see. It's getting hard to be someone but it all works out, it doesn't matter much to me”. To see the full, final results, click on: Beatle’s Weekly Poll – week 159. The poll’s results will also be listed at the: John Lennon Poll page at the domain’s Lennon Site.

Thanks to all of you for voting in this week and last week’s polls!
