Mount Sopris is a twin-summit mountain in the northwestern Elk Mountains range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, in Pitkin County. It's highest points are 12,966-feet (3,952 meters) high, with Its twin summits exactly equal in height. It may not be a 14'er or even a 13'er, but it is ranked the 3rd most impressive summit based on Omnidirectional Relief and Steepness.
Mount Sopris is believed to have been formed by an igneous intrusion 10,000 feet below the Earth's surface, geologically referred to as a pluton, that occurred around 30 million years ago, after the initial uplift of the modern Rocky Mountains. Yet Mount Sopris is not a volcano, but it is possible that an ancient volcano sat above it, with the current rock forming the magma chamber far below.
Sopris features an alpine climate characterized by long, cold winters, short mild summers, and dramatic temperature drops. The mountain doesn't have a weather station up on its summit, but its estimated to receive an average of 200 to 300 inches (500 to 760 centimeters) of snowfall each season.
