Morrison (elevation 6,368 feet / 1,941 meters) is in Jefferson County, Colorado and is located roughly 15 to 20 miles southwest of downtown Denver. The population was 396 at the 2020 census. This town, at the bottom of winding Bear Creek Canyon, is perhaps most famous for the nearby natural outdoor concert venue, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, that is located here. But Morrison is also known for other attractions including Dinosaur Ridge, a site of numerous dinosaur tracks and fossils from the Cretaceous and Jurassic periods. Lair O' the Bear Park , which is west of town, featuring a creek with diverse wildlife, hiking trails, fishing and picnic tables. Tiny Town & Railroad is a miniature village containing over 100 1/6 scale buildings and a 15 inch (381 mm) gauge miniature railway.

 

Morrison experiences a semi-arid, four-season climate with highly variable weather typical of the Colorado Front Range foothills. Summers are warm and dry with highs in the 80s°F (27°C), while winters are crisp and can bring heavy, sudden snowfall. Average snow season sees ~95 inches / 241 centimeters, with an  average yearly precipitation of  ~20 inches / 508 millimeters.  Average high temperature in July: ~86°F (30°C); Average low temperature (in December): ~16°F (-9°C).

Golden (elevation 5,784 feet / 1,763 meters), is the county seat of Jefferson County, and lies along Clear Creek at the base of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Golden is 8 miles / 12.8 kilometers to the north of Morrison. The U. S. Census Bureau estimates that the city population was 20,399 in 2020. Golden is a former gold rush town. Some of its popular attractions include: Lookout Mountain, the Coors Brewery, Golden Gate Canyon State Park, Clear Creek Whitewater Park and Lariat Loop National Scenic Byway. Then the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum has exhibits on earth science and mining history. Northeast is the Colorado Railroad Museum, with vintage trains and an 1800s-style railroad depot.

Golden experiences a semi-arid, continental climate. Summers are warm and dry, with average daily highs reaching the mid-to-upper 80s°F (around 30°C) in July and brief afternoon thunderstorms are common. Winters are crisp and cold but moderated by its proximity to the Rocky Mountain foothills. Daytime highs average in the mid-40s°F (around 7°C), while lows dip into the teens and 20s°F (-10 to -4°C). Because of the dry climate, snow melts relatively quickly here, with the downtown seeing about 40 inches / 102 centimeters annually, but the higher elevations above town see as much as 70 inches / 178 cm per season.
