Nederland is a small town located in the foothills of southwest Boulder County, Colorado. As of the 2020 US Census, it had a population of 1,471. The town was renamed by Dutch miners in 1874 for their native land, the Nederlands, in Western Europe. But "Nederland" translated to American English means "low land", ironic, considering that the town's elevation is at 8,235 feet (2,510 meters) while most locations in the Netherlands are near or even below sea level.

Nederland is located 17 miles (27 km) west of Boulder, 41 miles (66 km) south of Estes Park, and 47 miles (76 km) northwest of Denver.

Known for skiing at Eldora Mountain (see more on this below); as the hub for and the scenic views along the Peak to Peak Highway, it serves as a gateway to year-round outdoor recreation near Barker Meadow Reservoir. The town is famous for the Wild Bear Nature Center, which specializes in mountain ecology, the Carousel of Happiness, a restored 1910 carousel, and the unique annual Frozen Dead Guy Days festival, an iconic Colorado festival celebrating the story of Bredo Morstoel, who is cryogenically frozen in a Tuff Shed. While formerly held in Nederland, the festival moved to Estes Park in 2023 to accommodate its growing size.

Nederland has an alpine subarctic climate, with summer days that are warm but nights that are cool, and frost is possible even in mid-summer. Snowfall is possible most of the year. Annual snowfall is 139 inches (353 cm). Warmest temperature ever record is 89°F (32°C), this took place in the month of August, while the coldest reading, reached in the month of December, is -34°F (-37°C).
