Black Canyon National Park, Colorado

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is located in western Colorado and contains two primary entrances to the park: the south rim entrance is located 15 miles (24 km) east of Montrose, while the north rim entrance is 11 miles (18 km) south of Crawford and is closed in the winter. The park contains 12 miles (19 km) of the 48-mile (77 km) long Black Canyon of the Gunnison River. The Gunnison River drops an average of 34 feet per mile (6.4 m/km) through the entire canyon, making it the 5th steepest mountain descent in North America. The canyon's name owes itself to the fact that parts of the gorge only receive 33 minutes of sunlight a day.

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison was established as a national monument on March 2, 1933. It was redesignated a national park on October 21, 1999.

If you like, you can drive through both the South and North Rims of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park via scenic, paved (South) and unpaved (North) roads, allowing for easy access to numerous overlooks. The South Rim Road offers 12 viewpoints over roughly 7 miles, while the more rugged North Rim provides a quieter, 7-mile scenic drive. In Black Canyon of the Gunnison, you will see some of the steepest cliffs, oldest rocks, and craggiest spires found in North America. Forces of nature and the Gunnison River sculpted this canyon over two million years. The result is a vertical wilderness of rock, water, and sky. Wildlife in the park includes mule deer, elk and golden eagles.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park has a warm-summer continental climate. Average yearly precipitation in inches is 19.95 inches (507 mm), while its average annual snowfall is 121 inches (306 cm).
