Avon is located in Eagle County, Colorado along Interstate 70, U.S. Highway 6, and the Eagle River. The town's population was 6,072 at the 2020 U. S. Census. It's about two miles (3 km) south of Beaver Creek Resort at 7,989 feet (2,435 meters). The town began as a railway station in 1889. Originally spelled "Avin", the name was later changed to "Avon". It was incorporated in August of 1978.  A popular destination within Avon is Nottingham Lake, which offers a beach area and paddleboard/pedalboat rentals in the summer. Next to the lake is the Harry A. Nottingham Park and Pavilion, which serves as the location for an annual art festival, a summer concert series, and other activities.

Edwards (Elevation 7,221 feet /2,201 meters) is a town in the valley of the Eagle River and extends southwards up the valleys of Lake Creek and Colorow Creek, at the north end of the Sawatch Range. The town is 110 miles (180 km) west of Denver. Edwards is in a excellent location for skiers and riders. Beaver Creek Resort is 4 miles (6 km) to the east while Vail is 14.5 miles (23.3 km) to the east. At the U.S. Census 2020, the population of Edwards was 11,246. Colorado Mountain College operates its Vail Valley campus in Edwards.

Dowds Junction, at an elevation of 8,998 feet (2,744 meters), is located between the towns of Eagle-Vail and Vail, east of Avon and Edwards and west of Vail. It is a key geographic and recreational hub located in Eagle County, and it serves as the junction of the Eagle River and Gore Creek and is a vital point of transit and recreation in the Vail Valley.

Dowds Junction, Avon, and Edwards share a remarkably similar alpine-subarctic climate, in part since they sit adjacent to one another along the Interstate-70 corridor in the Eagle River Valley. They experience dry, sunny, and comfortable summers, and long, freezing, and snowy winters ideal for mountain recreation. Because they share the same valley microclimate, local temperatures and snowfall are relatively uniform across all three communities. Highs typically peak in the upper 70s to low 80s°F (27°C) from July through August, with cool, crisp nights in the 40s°F (4.4°C°C). Winters see highs range from the 30s to low 40s°F (4.4°C), while nighttime lows routinely drop into the single digits or below zero (-17°C) from December through February. Winters are very snowy, while summers are generally dry with scattered, quick-moving afternoon thunderstorms. Annual snowfall is about  85 inches / 216 cm in Avon, 110 inches / 279 cm in Edwards and 175 inches / 444.5 cm in Dowds Junction.
