I was just listening to the CD player I made out of coconuts and palm fronds and realized that John Hammond Jr. can also play slide better than Brian - but I don't think his work on the mellotron is quite up to snuff.
Seriously, though, I am in absolute agreement with your assessment of Brian's skills. Although a "dabbler", perhaps like a brilliant child with an attention deficit, the wide range of coloration his amazing array of talents gave the Stones throughout most of his tenure was a major factor in their greatness. Except for Harrison's sitar playing, the Beatles had to rely on uncredited studio musicians to compete.
