I would not say a total waste of talent. Just take the two songs you mention as examples, a great use of his talents. Then add all those other songs he help make hits of with his talent playing the slide guitar, mellotron, dulcimer, etc. No total waste of his talents, but yes, big waste of his life, to die so young.
