ROLLING STONES LYRICS

  RUBY TUESDAY

Written about Linda Keith, who first dated Keith Richards, then after they broke up, she dated Brian Jones. After she broke up with Jones, she then dated Jimi Hendrix. The lyrics were written by Jones and Richards together after their breakups with her, while the music was written by Jones alone. Mick Jagger had no hand in writing the song, yet Jones was never credited for his work, instead, Jagger was.

Some believe this song was where the riff between Jones and the Glimmer Twins started, as this wasn't the first time Jones wrote music for the Stones and wasn't credited. Years later, Mick Taylor would leave the band for this same reason, and Bill Wyman also noted this was part of the reason why he in time left the band, too. Other artists also noted having the same issues with the Glimmers - who to this day, have never addressed these claims.

"Ruby Tuesday" was recorded in November and December of 1966. It was released as a U.S. single on
January 13, 1967 and went to #1 on the charts. Released as a B side single in the UK also on January 13, 1967. Then also released in the U.S. on the album Between The Buttons on February 11, 1967.

Lead Vocal: Mick Jagger; Recorder, Piano and Vocal Harmony: Brian Jones; Acoustic Guitar, Backing Vocal: Keith Richards; Cello: Bill Wyman; Drums: Charlie Watts.

RUBY TUESDAY
(Jagger/Richards)

She would never say where she came from
Yesterday don't matter if it's gone
While the sun is bright
Or in the darkest night
No one knows
She comes and goes

Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day
Still I'm gonna miss you...

Don't question why she needs to be so free
She'll tell you it's the only way to be
She just can't be chained
To a life where nothing's gained
And nothing's lost
At such a cost

There's no time to lose, I heard her say
Catch your dreams before they slip away
Dying all the time
Lose your dreams
And you will lose your mind.
Ain't life unkind?

Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day
Still I'm gonna miss you.
