Tarrytown, New York

Tarrytown is a village in the town of Greenburgh in Westchester County, New York. It is located on the eastern bank of the Hudson River, approximately 25 miles (40 km) north of Midtown Manhattan in New York City. To the north of Tarrytown is the village of Sleepy Hollow (formerly "North Tarrytown"), to the south the village of Irvington and to the east unincorporated parts of Greenburgh. The population was 11,860 at the 2020 census.

The Tappan Zee Bridge (aka Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge); crosses the Hudson at Tarrytown, carrying the New York State Thruway (Interstates 87 and 287) to South Nyack, Rockland County and points in Upstate New York. The original Tappan Zee Bridge, which opened in 1955, was named after the Native American tribe Tappan and the Dutch word for "sea," Zee. There has been ongoing debate and frustration, particularly among residents of Rockland County, about the name change, with some advocating for the bridge to be renamed back to Tappan Zee. I had been over the old bridge many times in my youth and I'm also one of those who hate to see name changes - especially anything named after any politicians (from either U.S. party), so to me, when the locals have their say on what they will call this new bridge, I'll just use the old name here until then.
