The first European settlement at Oswego was a British trading post established in 1722, and it was first incorporated as a village in 1828 before becoming a city in 1848. British forces briefly captured the city during the War of 1812, but were defeated nearby later that same month.

Oswego has a warm-summer humid continental climate, bordering on a hot-summer climate characterized by cold, snowy winters and warm, often humid summers, typical of the Interior Northeast. The city is known for snowy winters, with an average seasonal snowfall of 140.1 inches (356 cm); this is primarily because of its lake-effect snowfall. In Summer, 90°F (32°C) days are quite rare here, and the city has never recorded a temperature of 100°F (38°C) or higher since records were first taken in 1926. It's all time high reading was 97°F (36°C), on August 14, 2002. It's coldest ever thermometer reading was −23°F (−31°C) on December 29, 1933. Oswego saw its largest single-day snowfall on January 31, 1966, when 50 inches (127 cm) of snow fell in a single day as part of the historic Blizzard of 1966.
