Best- Virginia. The Blue Ridge Mountains and countryside are exceptionally beautiful. It's green around here with rolling hills and plenty of wildlife. The people are friendly for the most part. Virginia Beach and the Atlantic Ocean/Chesepeake Bay are just hours away. You get the best of both worlds.
Downside is the State tax, but Virginia roads are kept up well because of it. I am amazed at how poor the roads can be when I travel out of state. Michigan's roads are ridiculously bad. Pot holes everywhere.
Worst State- Alabama. Everyone I ever met from Alabama (I was in the Navy for 4 years) was a pure asshole. I'm sure there are some good people down there too. But I've heard many other testimonies to the assholiness of Alabamans as well. Perhaps the water is tainted down there.
