RE: RE: What styles of music do you like?

I like good rock n' roll. It's so condescending to say something like that, because all intense music fans, probably except for those who listen to top 40 crap, think their ears are the ultimate barometer for the quality of music/rock n' roll. This doesn't mean they look down on people with different tastes, but they think they've got the answer. Myself included. I don't have much of a criterion for good music other than if it makes me feel good- that's what music is supposed to do and that way I don't have to really analyze what I think about it. All I say is that a rocker/uptempo tune should make me want to move, and a ballad should make me feel some kind of at least remotely deep emotion. It basically has to have what Keith calls "the X-factor". And I think good rock n' roll, in MOST cases- not all, for sure- has to come from the blues, have bloodlines to the blues, or at least have the right kind of feel and grit necessary to play the blues. Rock coming from rock doesn't always work. That's why a lot of commercial rock sucked in the late 70's and through the 80's and continually gets worse as later generations create rock that came from rock that came from rock... so on and so forth.

I also love the blues. It's the basis of rock n' roll and if you listen to the right stuff- from 30's acoustic to 60's electric- nothing is more powerful. I really like old country and bluegrass- Johnny Cash, Ralph Stanley... for example, I love the soundtracks to the movies Cold Mountain and Oh Brother, Where Art Thou. I like jazz. I even fancy a little classical on the right Sunday morning. Music is what I spend most of my time involved with, listening to it, thinking about it, reading about it. I guess I like it if it can keep me interested enough to spend my time on it.
