Another long post?
Okay...I had a jump start thanks to my sister who's 6 years older. She was a schizo musicwise, like most teenage girls I guess. My first memory of longplayers: Bat Out Of Hell and Kiss' Dynasty. I bought the latter on cd a few months ago. It has a nice 2000 Man cover on it.
She leaned heavily on British pop rock and so did I. Think early U2, Simple Minds, The Cure but also more depressing stuff like The Smiths. She also familiarised me with The Rolling Stones: she had the Rewind album and wanted to go to the Dutch gigs in '82...with me (I was turning 9 soon, so it was time she figured), but my parents wouldn't have it.
I switched to hard rock and heavy metal during the second half of the 80s. That lasted for a few years. Favorites were Iron Maiden and Metallica. Metallica was an extremely loud band untill they made And Justice For All btw. I still spin Maiden every now and then for old times sake, but my head banging days are more or less gone.
My love for the Rolling Stones started in 89. By then I was hanging out in bars, and got to know great rock n' roll, alternative bands and classic blues thanks to the only good rock pub in Noordwijk, the place I grew up. I found that place because they played the best music in town, and because I stuck around I got to know great bands such as the La's, Tragically Hip, Black Crowes, Nirvana and Pearl Jam and loads of old stuff.
How many bars spin Exile On Main St start to finish and how many pub owners tell folks to fuck off if they don't like it...on a friday night? (side note: since they threw out the old record player and got a desktop music server, the times have changed, but I give the guy credit for it till this day. And he did pull the same stunt with ABB in the week it got out).
I dwelled mostly in the classic rock section though. But thanks to the folks in that bar, I learned not to focus on the past too much. There's good new stuff out every day.
The styles I like and continue to like are Rock (50s, southern, classic, new..you name it), folkish singer-songwriters, alt country, blues, and guitar based pop (try the Magic Numbers..that's a fun album!). And an occasional commercial record digests nicely too: I have an Outkast album, I have a NERD album. I also spin some classic pop from time to time: I feel the need for some Queen at least once a year, and I even throw in a Simple Minds comp once in a while and I think of times long gone..my sis taught me how to dance real cool on Dont You Forget About Me...don't ask me how to do it though!
