RE: What styles of music do you like?

I like stuff that has some soul to it, and usually sounds like a bunch of guys playing music. Melodies and harmonies are important, but a good rhythm usually comes first. I don't usually like singers with traditionally "good" voices like George Michael or Elton John. I like a band that can play a variety of different styles. Too many bands today stick to one tried and true method of songwriting instead of branching out. I can appreciate a brilliant guitarist like Hendrix or Duane Allman, but when it starts getting too much about the technicality (Van Halen type bands, speed metal, etc.) I'm not interested.

I like the Stones and Beatles the most. I love Chuck Berry, James Brown, a lot of Stax Records stuff (particularly Booker T and the MGs), a bit of Motown, a couple of Al Green's early albums. The Superfly soundtrack by Curtis Mayfield is a great album. I love Billy Preston's first two albums that he did on the Apple label. I'm a pretty big P-Funk fan. Funkadelic's first six albums are awesome. Sly Stone's early 70s work is also incredible.

Classic rock stuff that I like includes anything by Hendrix, most of The Who's stuff, some Cream, early Allman Brothers, the first four Santana albums. I think Zeppelin has quite a few great songs but none of their albums are consistent and some of their stuff is just too pretentious for me. The solo on "Heartbreaker" bores me to death, for example. AC/DC has a lot of fun stuff, but they're very one-dimensional to me and I can rarely listen to a whole album of theirs in one sitting without getting a bit sick of it.

I like two Pink Floyd albums, Meddle and Dark Side Of The Moon. Dark Side might be my favorite album by someone other than the Stones. I like a few Kinks albums, especially Lola vs. Powerman, and quite a few of their early singles. I picked up Electric Warrior by T Rex recently and liked that album a lot.
