I go entirely by the groove. That's it- my one and only criteria. If something grooves me, then I like it, if it doesn't, then I don't.
Now then I say "groove" I mean my definition of it- everybody else probably has one, so most of what I say probably is incorrect for anybody else. But it's what defines the music I like.
So there's no real pre-requisites as to what music i'll listen to. Mostly it ends up being Blues/Rock/Hard Rock/Metal. But hell, I like some Rap music, and some Country too.
I like the STones because they have the best groove. The reason I don't like the Black Crowes, even though in a sense they have all the ingredients to be a great band, they simply sound like they are trying to replicate somebody else's groove. The Crowes are just an example, mind you.
A lot of things contribute towards the groove- it's not just percussion and bass. A singer's voice can throw you into a groove. You could be in a frightened groove, a sad groove, or a tense groove. Lyrics help with the groove- a beautiful lyric such as "you know I can't let you slide through my hands" puts me into that groove.
Being into the groove though doesn't really mean listen to 10 minute jams or anything though, because most of those don't groove me. Some do, but most don't.
THe ultimate example of groove for me is the last verse of CYHMK and the middle part of Midnight Rambler. Both can throw me, into an intense groove, where I can only close my eyes, and let time stop, and then you get into this groove where you can just bob your head as the song gets more and more powerful and just envelops you. It's almost painful, but very good.
Midnight Rambler is my favourite song.
