Well, I think I approach this topic from a different place than most of you because I am not only a girl, but I am only 18. Therefore, I grew up in a completely different world, musically speaking, and my tastes are a bit different.
I started out getting into music in middle school (2000-2002). I'll admit, I started out liking really crappy modern rock like blink-182. They were my favorite band in middle school. I also really liked girly chick music, like Jewel and Sarah McLachlan. Suffice it to say, I've grown out of both of these phases (though I do still hold a soft spot for Jewel).
It was in the summer before I started high school that I discovered the Beatles and my life changed. They were so amazing (still are, of course) and so wonderfully different that I pretty much renounced my crappy music right then and started on a whole new musical odyssey. The Stones were the second band I really got into (thanks to my dad who is a major Stones fan and has been forever).
That's when I found classic rock, anyway, and some of my favorite bands in that arena are the two I already mentioned plus: the Beach Boys, Blondie, David Bowie, Cream, CCR, CSNY, Donovan, the Doors, Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Kinks, Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell, Pink Floyd, Van Halen, Velvet Underground, the Who, Neil Young, and Frank Zappa, among many others.
However, I'm also interested in a number of other musical genres, which don't seem to be as popular around here. I love some classic R&B music, particularly Marvin Gaye, Al Green and Prince. I'm also very interested in the New Wave and punk years in the late '70s and LOVE the Clash, along with Television, Talking Heads, the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, Sonic Youth, the Jam, etc. I like some prog and art rock (Yes, Roxy Music). I like some country (Gram Parsons mostly) and some bands from the '80s (Joy Division, the Cure, the Smiths).
I also really like a lot of rock/pop music from the '90s and today. It DOESN'T all suck, as is the popular myth and much of it is just as exciting and interesting as older music IMHO. These artists include Tori Amos, Beck, Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Alicia Keys, Nirvana, No Doubt, Pearl Jam, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead, the Shins, Sleater Kinney, Soundgarden, etc.
I'm pretty eclectic, as long as the music is good. The only styles of music I can't stand are bubblegum pop, rap, techno, screamy metal type and most jazz.
