I like a TON of stuff, but if I had to boil my tastes down to certain common denominators it would have to be: Drums, Bass, Guitars.
I grew up listening to my parent's fifties stuff. Bill Haley and the Comets, Fats Domino, and Chuck Berry. To this day, my Dad and I still laugh that it was him who turned me on to Chuck Berry. Cause he HATED the Stones! Actually ripped down my posters once and called them "Acid Freaks."
Anyway, it's weird that as much as you sometimes thought you hated your parent's music, you really didn't. I still like Johnny Cash, and remember that playing all the time in our house.
I can tell you what my taste is NOT...It's not Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, or Yes. Was never much interested in all that...Especially Floyd. Their music to me, was always about so much more than just what was coming out of the speakers. While I can appreciate that, what I liked about the Stones was that the music was always about THE MUSIC (Does that make sense)?
My tastes run back to the basics: Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Cash, and that sound of the early Stones and Kinks, and lesser known bands like the Standells. And if you think about it, that's probably the best and easiest sound to recreate in a smoky barroom.
