The Reagan FCC also demolished TV as we have known it. In various ways it increased the corporate profitability of the medium, allowed consolidation of the industry, abandoned requirements of public service programs and most importantly abolished the fairness doctrine that required balanced presentation of public issues. As far back as 1958 Edward R. Morrow urged the networks to "get up off our fat surpluses and recognize that television...is being used to distract, delude, amuse and insulate us." How timely is THAT observation?
