Up until the '80s, the FCC had something called the "7-7-7" rule, meaning that no person or business could own more than 7 AM, 7 FM stations and/or 7 TV stations. This was intended to keep a variety of voices/music/opinions on the public airwaves without one conglomeration monopolizing it. You can thank Ronnie Reagan for striking that rule. Now 4 outlets (Clear Channel and Infinity being two of them, can't remember the other twos' names) own something like 90 % of all radio stations, and their mass-market policies are killing what's left of radio. The days of dee-jays picking their own songs to play was already way on the wane when 7-7-7 was struck down, and now it's a thing of the past. Playlists for the entire nation are compiled in NY and LA. There's no regionalism anymore. Radio is basically dying. The future is in satellite radio and podcasts. Airwave radio is going the way of VHF/UHF TV (remember that?) There's no use even complaining about radio or hoping it'll shape up. It's going down the tubes and nothing's going to save it.
