Huge media conglomerates have bought up everything.
90% of everyting the American public reads, sees and hears is owned by five or six companies: GE, Viacom, News Vorp (Fox), Clear Channel, AOL/Time/Warner/CNN and a couple others... And all of these compnaies tow a pro-business, pro-Bush party line (believe it or not). They all make their money from rotten pharnaceutical advertisers and such.
There once was an independent progressive radio station here in the DC area that would play five songs in a row with "Blue" in the title just for the hell of it. They also broke new acts like the B52s, REM and Duran Duran BEFORE they broke into the mainstream. That station was bought out long ago.
Nowadays, I can't listen to commerical radio AT ALL. It's the same bland cookie-cutter format wherever you go. I bet I could turn on the radio now and find five stations still playing Dido's song three or four years after it was released.
I subscribe to XM satellite. It isn't perfect, but for $12.95 a month, it's the best entertainment value around. (Just try going to see a movie this weekend. And they wonder why box office is down.)
