I had similar experiences. I saw them on the "Hollywood Palace" show on TV in 1964 (the one in which they were insulted by Dean Martin), and the primary impression they made on me then was that they looked kind of scruffy.

The first song of theirs that really turned me on was "The Last Time", which I bought as a 45 single. Their first album that I bought was also "The Rolling Stones, Now!", which I probably bought on sale at a Sears Roebuck for around $1.99. I still have that LP today. That was the record that converted me, because the Stones had a tough sound that spoke more to my life experiences than any other band did.

I also saw them in 1969, at Altamont, and IMO the way they sounded back then with just the 2 guitars, bass, and drums was way more powerful than what I've heard from them in more recent years. And despite all of the other big-name bands that performed that day at Altamont, I felt that the Stones' performance was head and shoulders above all of them, despite the craziness that was going on in front of the stage.
