Brian was probably the best rhythm player when it came to a more conventional style of playing. That style can be summed up as steady, driving, not in-your-face or overly prominent in the mix, but as a support to the lead guitar and song in general. If it were to drop out, the song would fall flat.

Keith took rhythm guitar to another level. In a lot of cases his rhythm is the de-facto lead instrument. Examples are too numerous to mention: "Street Fighting Man" and "JJF" are a couple of early examples. So Keith certainly gets the nod for being the most creative and influential rhythm player. Townshend is another musician who superbly blurs the lines between lead and rhythm playing.
