On rare occasions, and in rare individuals, heroin addiction can be overcome by sheer willpower, and can even survive the occasional backslide.
I think we all (even the fuckwad who predicted his imminent death) agree that Keith is a rare individual.
As an example of survival I use another rare individual: William Seward Burroughs. He overcame a habit which was longer and nastier than Keith's, survived several relapses, and lived a long, productive, celebrated life. He did it, as you mentioned, with the love and support of his friends, and a great deal of willpower. I can't picture either Keith or Bill attending NA meetings. Both men replaced their addictions to heroin with addiction to alcohol - booze and pills and powders, you got to choose your medicine.
