Just got the Four Flicks DVD. Haven't seen the whole thing yet, but in the bits I've watched, it looks like Ronnie Wood is just not the same. It doesn't even seem like he wants to be on stage. He doesn't look like his old, happy, playful self AT ALL!!!! He really seems to be just going through the motions. I almost get the feeling he won't be Stone much longer.
What I also noticed (and correct me if I'm wrong) is that Keith is playing almost all the lead guitar and Ronnie has been pushed back to merely a rhythym guitarist role, rarely getting the spotlight, or even a share of it.
I recall, on the "Black and Blue" and "Some Girls" albums anyway, that Keith was officially listed as a rhythym guitarist. On "Black and Blue" the Stones auditioned several lead guitarists (Harvey Mandel comes to mind) and eventually wound up choosing Ronnie Wood for the spot. Ronnie was listed as "lead guitarist" on Some girls I seem to remember.
Now, though, it doesn't seem like he's enjoying himself at all. It ruined the DVD for me, I felt so sad for him.
Probably being sober now has contributed to this a bit. Its gotta be tough not drinking in that atmosphere. But I feel his role as a backup to Keith and a mere role player is the main cause of his dissatisfaction. They used to be a BAND -- now its more the Mick and Keith show. I'm truly disappointd.
BTW, what older DVDs are out there that capture the Stones as a BAND? I am particularly interested in late 60s/early 70's stuff.
